After all my time on PH I should know the answer to this question.
My friend wants to buy this car from a trader. Really nice car,I checked DVLA,it passed its MOT last month, BUT, it says the road tax was due November 2018. So if my friend buys the car today, will she just pay tax from April 1st on wards. What about all the unpaid tax?

Yes from 1st April, the previous tax is down to the previous owner who MAY have had it SORNED. I assume it's slightly different if it has been with the dealer during this period.

Just as an aside, my son's car was 'written off' as uneconomical to repair. We have tracked it recently and noticed that it also has been MOT'd in the past month but has no tax since the write off last year.
Obviously a dealer or someone has bought the wreck (it wasn't a bad rear-ender, just classified as uneconomical), repaired it and is putting it back on the market.
So, OP, make sure if it has been categorised as a write-off or find out the reason why it hasn't been taxed.
If your gut tells you something's not right, follow your gut.

Surely there's a good chance it's just been floating around in the trade for the past few months, hence no tax. Nothing unusual in that? Purchaser will only be responsible for taxing it from this month.

Exactly - People seem to be reading far too much into this!
