Insuring a vehicle that is not mine?
Discussion
Is it possible to insure a vehicle that is registered to someone else. My wife has a motorbike that she can’t ride because of an ongoing health problem. It has an mot but is on dorm. Spoke to my insurance and the lad said it is not possible due to the bike not being in my name. Do I have to transfer the bike to me or are the insurance company just being fussy?

Ask to speak to a supervisor. There should be no issue in spouses insuring each others vehicles. I believe there is nothing preventing several people insuring the same vehicle (apart from cheapo insurance companies' own rules as mentioned above) but only one policy holder could submit a claim at any one time. There must be, however, if I remember my exams from many years ago, an "insurable interest" on the part of the policy holder meaning that they must either own it or be allowed use of it.
The usual (and possibly the most cost effective) way is to have the policy holder add named drivers, particularly if they are family members.

Correct. Between husband and wife, there is always insurable interest, because all possessions are marital property. You don't have to be an owner to have an insurable interest. If I borrow a car, I can be liable for the value of it whilst in my possession. So I have an insurable interest.
What I can't do is insure my neighbours car, because it's worth £50K and he drives like a t
t. In the hope that if he crashes it, I'll get a £50K win. That's a contract for a bookmaker, not an insurer. Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
