Crit'Air sticker driving in Paris, how do they know?

So I haven't driven to France in a while, and didn't know about their low emission zone until today (driving to paris tomorrow). Long story short, I don't have enough time to get the Crit Air sticker they require on all cars, and wondering how likely I am to get fined?

It's a very slim window, our hotel is literally about 200 metres within the zone, and we are due to drive back on Monday. My question is, do they automatically detect via cameras, who doesn't have a sticker and fine drivers that way? or is it due to police manually pulling you over and stopping you?

If the latter, we'll probably just risk it - as I said its about 200 metres out the zone, but if its automatically detected by camera we'd probably leave the hotel before 8am, when the low emission zone starts.

It's in the hotel car park.. if parking was free 200m down the street then I'd do that for sure, but don't know until I get there!

For the sake of 200 meter's I'd just make up a similar looking sticker that says something in English but would pass at a cursory glance.

Looks like you can just pinch one from the front forks of a motorbike. Really secure.

This - you have to display the disc (the gendarmes check) but also they have the reg on a database.
Word of advice if you do get one for subsequent trips, they are anal about disc placement, plus it's self adhesive and designed to be theft resistant... As it's somewhere I need to stick other passes I stuck mine to an acrylic disc and placed inside a tax disc holder so I can remove it at will.

They only cost 3 quid, hardly going to be worth nicking.

I got one in time for driving to Paris a few weeks ago, it came within about 5 days. I drove into the outer zone, and didn't see any cameras, but I did not cross the Peripherique with the car. Maybe they have cameras there. Maybe I missed them on the outer zone. But I think it's just les flics using mk1 eyeballs to enforce.

Sorry for the hijack, but I'm heading to France in a week and not looked into this! We're not going into Paris, but wondered if I need this for other parts of the country.

We're getting a ferry to northern Spain then heading to Toulouse, then over to Provence and then home via Beaune, Reims and back in to the UK via Calais.

Will I need one of these too?

As I remember (but it should be on the link) only Paris is permanent, and the others are only an if-there's-a-polution-emergency ones, not full time so you'll probably be OK. It was quick to get but touch and go for a week.

Yeah, it has to be on the right hand side of the car, meaning on an RHD car it's at the driver's side. I got a minor MOT fault for displaying mine.
