Average speed cameras popping up everywhere?

Is it me or are they just appearing everywhere? At what point do we say enough is enough?

As an aside, how may pairs of cameras are actually switched on at any point in time? Impossible to tell which ones are live, but presumably not all are at any one point in time?

There's a 6 mile 50 limit stretch near me with average speed cameras on. They've been there for years, having been amongst the first in the country, and its always been a source of debate as to whether they are functional or not at any given time. Either way they are effective at getting everyone to stay within the posted limit.

Why would they not all be switched on? The system is fully automated and the speeders just pop out of the system and recieve a letter.

Not round here. There's only one live fixed camera in the whole county, although a few of the old ones are still there, but inoperative and growing moss on them.

Is it possible that you are talking about regular fixed cameras, rather than av speed cams (being the topic of the thread)?

Whilst I don't like them, they are much more effective than a single Gatso or Truvelo, which you can just increase your speed after you have. passed them. They don't even need to be switched on. Are you prepared to take the risk with your licence?

Big brother is here to stay, although generally I am in favour of speed limits providing they are sensible and realistic.

Av cams are very effective as a lot of drivers stick to a chunk below the limit on their speedos to keep safe from a ticket which in a 50 tends to take the speed down to 45.

As I have posted previously, many drivers, in an ASC zone, slow right down to pass the cameras then speed up until the next set. I don't think it works like that.

It doesn't, but people are dumb, and the reason we have conservative speed limits in the first place.

If you think things are oppressive now, just wait until we're all in electric vehicles- which is now a clear aim of Government.
Your electric car will be full of tech to 'monitor its performance'. Eventually cars will use GPS and roadside wifi to regulate your speed. If you do transgress, I'll bet your own car will eventually be able to grass you up. Your speeding tickets will arrive in the post with no cameras required. In the event of a crash, your driving data will all have been logged and available to plod for inspection.
I'm already surprised how many people are happy to have insurance companies install spyware in their vehicles in the hope of a lower premium.

This is just about spot on. Not sure why the next poster joked about your suggestion.

However I think you might have one bit wrong - you won't get a speeding ticket in the post, it will be deducted automatically by direct debit from you 'driving' account.

That's what people used to say about speed cameras, ANPR, PPC, etc, etc. It was only a few years ago that the WWW, mobile phones, GPS, etc, etc, were all an impossible dream.

You conveniently ignored my point about black boxes. How long have they been around? And how long have the loony bin been saying it'll spell the death of motoring..
