It's surprisingly common.

I think most people wouldn't have car insurance if it was legally required.

As an aside - Would the owner of that house be able to claim off the guy who damaged his house regardless of a lack of insurance?

He wasn't charged with att. murder. It was arson/reckless as to whether someone was put in danger, so a lower tariff.

However, is does seem very lenient, especially as the motive was, according to the judge, malice. No mitigation there.

There seems to be a suggestion that he was trying to kill himself, and nearly succeeded.

How can you do £600k worth of damage to a house that looks like it's worth a third of that?

Regards the sentence - he was in the house himself and ended up injured and in a coma whereas the wife was unharmed, so it's credible that it was an attempted suicide and done in a bad state of mind, and therefore factored into the sentence (IANAL though)

Guy I work with does not have any because he is as tight as a ?????

Even showers at work to save the pennies, heats up food in work for a hot meal then has a cold dinner at home.

No mortgage so no need he says.

The guy I used to live next to, that ruined everything owned.

Shouldn't have been a problem, but as soon as my own insurance company realised they weren't claiming it all back from his insurance company, things got a lot more difficult.

Or, another way to answer your question, fking morons.

And most building surveyors I know live in houses with obvious problems that they would slate on a Home Buyers report.

Doesn't mean the house isn't rubbish, like it doesn't mean the actuary won't be hugely out of pocket if his house catches fire or subsides

In theory yes, though whether a 68 year old divorced prisoner whose own house is a pile of rubble is actually going to be able to come up with £600K, or anything close to it, is another question entirely. No court can force someone to pay you money that he didn't have.

Well you'd have to hope his insurer covered it - oops he didn't have one. rolleyes

And he won't personally have enough assets, so however actuarial you may be household insurance looks like a good idea!

And A1VDY you could try some politeness - try google if you can't understand it.
