New camera fitted to a street sign - any ideas ?

Workman turned up at 11pm last night and fitted this to a sign post outside my gran in laws. Any ideas ?.
I assume it's to count traffic as there's no white line in the road although I know sod all about such things.
Wife is worried as she was doing 40 past it in a 30 before the gramps pointed it out.

40 in a 30? Maybe if she gets caught doing this she'll be offered a speed awareness course and learn not to speed in urban areas.
Since where possible 55 percent of cars are speeding in urban areas. That's a) a lot of speed awareness courses.
b) clearly not causing anything like the problem some would have you believe
c) Unchanged since the introduction of speed awareness courses.
d) Nothing to do with the question asked.

These went up on a new section of urban dual carriageway in my home town. A short time later the lanes were scrubbed out and redesigned to extend a turning left lane as it was decided the original layout was causing excessive traffic congestion which could be eased by restricting straight on traffic to the right hand lane and making the whole left lane left turn only.
Traffic censors have been fitted in the carriageway at many junctions as well.

That's a new one 
Some of these were put up in our village. Put there by a builder trying to convince the Planners that they didn't need to build a new road to ease congestion from Housing they were planning to build. Local council had them removed as they were using our "heritage" light posts without permission of the city or parish councils.

b) the problem is not merely collisions, it is noise, pollution (exhaust + tyre + noise) and the anti-social effect of heavy vehicles moving at 40 rather than 30 mph where people are walking around
c) Interesting, and a shame. Where did you read this out of interest?
d) No, but the OP mentioned it, including the specific figures, and the question wasn't just, 'What is this camera?' but, 'What is this camera? A speed camera? I hope my wife doesn't get caught for going 33.3% over the speed limit in town.'

Yes I do, sometimes. I rarely speed in urban areas, especially residential parts, on my motorbikes, and pretty much never in the car. In neither case is excess speed habitual – on the bike it tends to be brief, and tactical. National speed limits on the bikes are fair game.livinginasia said:

I know, I know, I was trolling a little bit, but people who habitually speed in built-up areas are dycks, and I couldn't resist. I of course wish the OP's wife well and this may have been a one-off infraction.I'll be interested to know what this is – a traffic 'censor' or something else.
