Having seen a recent surge in cycle events they inevitably lead to those guys that are too fat to ride but instead don a high viz and stop the traffic when event riders go past.

Now, I assume some are trained to do this very job but is this legal, can anyone simply by association to such an event step in front of you to let cyclists past?

They can if they obtained the proper permissions.

You can run a pedestrian wearing a high viz jacket over it you want - or you could accept they have the right to use the road and are using that temporarily to impede your progress

yes

I'm not a massive fan of it all but have a live and let live approach to most things, i am sure that at times the sports love cause a minor inconvenience to others, and know damn well i have held up traffic to help people revers trailers, get out of blind driveways, and things like that.

As such acceptance (even if grudging at times) is almost always the best policy. There is a special place in hell for those that hold you up for longer than reasonably necessary.

If they are really using it for that still no need to hurt anyone but they would be obstructing the Highway. Far more likely though that they will be supported by suspensions and road closures.

If they are an accredited marshal they have legal powers to stop traffic.

Live and let live. Don't forget we can now close public roads off totally so we can compete in cars and motorbikes on them. Wonder how the cycling community feel about that?

And the little buggers don't identify themselves or the club holding the event, we get regular races and these motorbike people just cut you off without a word or acknowledgment which annoys people. There is no notice of the event, gets hidden on a facebook page that most people don't know exists or would not have a reason to visit anyway.

Do it all the time - if is called a motorway (note also includes special roads)

Not bothered in the slightest.

I'm sure you could easily find out the organiser by asking one of the marshals. Any cycling Road Race that uses motorcycle marshals will certainly have been organised in accordance with the relevant laws.

BC's website will also give you details of all races and organisers.

Honestly truly there are somethings in life that you don't need to try to know that they are not for you. Marshaling a cycle or foot race and sticking my hand in a working waste disposal unit are fairly high on my personal copy of that list hehe

As already indicated they can have the authority & my goodness don't they love it.
Just imagine the joy of donning the ultimate fashion garment & being allowed to walk into the road & actually stop all those horrible people in polluting vehicles just so ones chums can pedal along in their weird fancy dress. Oh the power, the sense of superiority, sometimes it must be too overwhelming for words.

You ever met an accredited marshal?

Or maybe they are, you know, just marshaling an event?...

I'm grateful that they are there for events to allow people, on occasion, to enjoy the road and be safe, can even be non-cycing based - even if on occasion they are walts.

I've never done it for a bike race (the triathlon was close though), but have done so for running events and will do so this weekend for a village a carnival. No sense of superiority, just putting something back into the community for others. However if doing so makes you feel superior, go for it.

Hi!

I’m an accredited Marshall. I’m not exactly thin, but still race, so not in too bad shape. I also drive cars fast sometimes.

No we don’t get to keep the signs, but having them means that we get to stop traffics so the future Cavendish’s And Wiggin’s don’t get mown down in a race.

Thanks for your patience all those good drivers on here, you might even get a little wave and a thank you off me if I have to stop you. Btw, all those motorbike Marshall’s have 30 people’s lives in their hands so sometimes get a little busy to thank everyone.

I believe that the process is:

You will need a Traffic Management Order in place.
This will be granted by the local council usually after paying them a fee.

Additionally there will need to be a Traffic Management Plan in place and there are various commercial companies out there who will do this
sort of thing including making and siting the signage.

Finally marshals will almost certainly be volunteers and will stand out in all weather for hours.
As part of the TMO a full risk assessment will also need to be submitted and a full briefing will need to be given to marshals.
