power steering delete

Quick question, I am going to swap the manual rack from my e30 to a powered e46 set up but I may need to install it without the lines and pump at first as I am sourcing parts and have a limited window to do the rack work. If I run the car as a manual steering vehicle with the hydraulic rack is this still road legal? I appreciate it would be an MOT fail if tested as is.

Have you driven a car with failed PS? It's very very difficult to steer so perhaps not safe.

A car without power steering will be lighter then a power steering rack that isn't operational
So you may find it very hard to drive like that

both my e30 and e36 race cars have power steering racks with the power steering disconnected.

They're not too bad to drive once moving but quite heavy when maneuvering, I just ordered a blanking piece to go on the rack from the states and found a shorter belt to get rid of the pump.

There's also a risk of damaging steering column links from the significant increase in torque needed to turn the wheel.

The PS pump failed in my previous Mercedes. So I drove it with no PS for a few weeks whilst I sourced a pump. All fine up until the last 2 meters of a drive where you do the fine maneuvering. I had arms like Popeye at the end of it.

So, best avoid

A power steering system full of fluid but no working pump is very hard to steer.

A power steering rack empty of fluid is fine though.

Just to close this out in case anyone is interested, I did the delete and haven't bothered to book in for the pump to be done. It drives great and it was manual already so not much different. A bit heavy in faster bends but unless you are on track no bother. My wife loves driving it so it turns out that it's no big deal. Recommended.

You can use a Saxo electric power steer pump and locate it where you like. Pirtek can make custom hoses for you.

I do have a spare one. I used to run it on my Cossie powered 205 Pug

Delete has been around for ages. My AMG merc was ordered without any badges...the factory spec listed it as Badge delete.

If I type something and then want to remove it I press Delete.

I think "Cringeworthy" might be a bit extreme and is actually probably a newer slang than delete. Maybe you just need a holiday?

Very much the same as the old days where we fitted Quick racks to rally cars . The benefits of 2.2 turns lock to lock far outweighed the heavier stearing .
The difference with modern vehicles is the huge size of tyres and suspension and steering geometry that make powered steering a necessary fitment rather than an option .

When your power steering fails at 50mph it's a very scary experience. The power steering in my Peugeot 3008 did that, just before a bend. I'm a strong guy but it's not fun to try and move a wheel connected to an electrical power pump.

All because the one tyre was flatter than the other and the car couldn't handle the pressure difference. Well done Peugeot!

In the realm of ‘pull the trigger’, ‘swap out’ etc but not as bad as ‘just brought a new car’ or ‘I could of done’..........
