Why isn't there more unmarked police cars?

Wondering, when people see a marked police car they (most of the time..) behave themselves, same as if you thought you might bump into one you adjust your driving to suit..

if there's a chance ANY car might be plod, wouldn't people behave more of the time?

Also - better suited to catching people in the act?

Also - Cheaper to prepare new force cars, less to do ?

most unmarked cars have a good set of strobes, flashers, sirens etc so could get through traffic, make themselves known if required?

lastly, if you can see the size of the 'army' you might attempt to outrun/fight but if their numbers are a mystery, you might think twice?

We can’t afford them.

ETA. The police have sorted this by allowing dash cam warriors to submit their footage online so in essence most cars on the road are now “unmarked plod” they just can’t stop the real crime such as drugs trafficking etc but at least otherwise law abiding citizens will get fined more often.

when you replace a retired marked car, replace it with an unmarked - apparently they're £3000 cheaper to prepare also?

It's a bit of a barmy idea.

You would have to have a lot to make a difference. Any actually they would not be very visible as a presence.

Where as a big fluorescent car is definitely a presence even if rarer than they used to be.

I think its safe to say that most people think of law abiding citizens as nice people who don't rob and hurt people, or run cartels. We don't generally label people as crims who do 80 on the M5 on the way to IKEA.

But seriously, we know there are less because you used to see them on the hard shoulder ticketing someone on a daily basis. It is quite rare to see them in action now.

Of course it can.

In some circumstances you wouldn't commit an offence not stopping for an unmarked car driven by an officer not in uniform, but that is not the same as what you just said.
They can request it & if you do stop there is nothing wrong with that.
