Road Sign Meaning and Legality

I had a discussion with a Black Cab diriver last week about the legality of a road sign.....

By the traffic light there is a free-standing No Right Turn sign, I assumed that this meant no right turn at these lights and was perfectly clear and legal

The driver however said that as the sign is not on a pole that it is not legal and therefore unenforceable.

Anyone know if the driver had a point?

Black cab drivers use their own rule book ,which is mainly BS.

Think about traffic management (lane closures, full carriageway closures, temporary traffic lights etc).

That's pretty much all installed on free standing frames and is very much enforceable.

The junction in the OP is often very busy with vehicles and pedestrians- even if that sign is enforceable, it could very easily be obscured. I would potentially have some sympathy for someone who overlooked it at busy times.

Not so much for the cab driver whose view seems to be-' I see it, but it doesn't apply to me '!

If I saw that sign sitting there all on its lonesome, and not part of a temporary traffic management setup, I'd ignore it.

Isn't there a no right turn sign as part of the traffic light?

I would worry more about the 20 limit sign in the top left of that frame...

Looks like a camera enforced no left turn, with the right turn added. Probably due to roadworks in the area making the right turn a normally low-traffic route into something that could back up quickly?

normally a no left / right sign needs to be before the junction, not after it, If that is the only sign you could see I suspect a bit further up there is a small right turn perhaps even a private entrance that is blocked off
