A certain type of house buyer !

Hi all, are you able to pick or choose a buyer for your house? i would like to sell my house to a very certain type of person or family, so while its for sale and available on an open day, can I put a questionnaire out asking certain types of questions etc. Where would i stand legally.? before and after sale. Would the neighbours have a legal whinge at me. Then be able to pick the right ones at the end of the day for the sale........................ta

I imagine you could do this, so long as you're not discriminating against a protected group.

But you're selling, so the person who offers the most money / easiest transaction is the person to sell to!

You can sell a house to anyone you like but I'd imagine you would get a bit of a hiding if you said no on racial (or some other) reasons.

Aha. So this isn’t a grand philanthropic gesture to sell to a “worthy” recipient, or a knuckle-dragging white-supremacist cleansing attempt - in fact you want to sell to a particular type of person to spite someone else?

gotta say it - nothing good will come of that. No matter how much your family or neighbours annoy you now, it’d be better if you walked away with your head held high and moved on from them.

Surely it would be pretty stupid to deliberately sell your house to someone you thought was undesirable in an attempt to spite your old neighbors as a genuine undesirable will likely be a nightmare to sell to.

Funny this. Mate of mine is selling his house at the end of a quiet(ish) cul-de-sac and is very keen to sell to a large travelling family due to the ahole over the road having an obsession with using power tools at all times of day and generally being annoying, but staying as close to the line without crossing it.

At the end of the day you can sell to whomever you want. I had two offers on a previous place, one was a cash buyer and offered a little less but I took it because I needed to sell. The higher offer involved a mortgage and hence had more risk.

What you cannot do is try to exclude potential buyers due to protected characteristics either directly (holding up Dulux swatches to gauge their skin colour) or indirectly (asking if they are a big fan of musical theatre who holidays in Mykonos).

Google Fergus Wilson for an example of someone who indirectly discriminated when renting out properties.

If you use an estate agent to sell your property, then it is unlawful to discriminate against someone because of their disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. If you sell your home yourself, it is usually only unlawful to discriminate against someone because of their race.

If you are selling through an estate agent you may need to check their Ts & Cs in that you may be required to sell to the highest bidder so that they receive the most commission.

Well go on then. Who do you want to sell to? There’s no reason to be so vague if there’s nothing illegal about your choice of purchaser.

What are you planning on asking them?


Unless the house is very desirable don't expect to have that many potential buyers that you can pick or choose.

And even if you ask them, what due diligence are you going to do to see if they are telling the truth?

To be honest as a buyer, I would politely decline. You are selling your cherished house. I'm buying an object.

IF you have an agent they would advise you not to (and GDPR would apply if they were involved in the process). They may also get bolshie if your decision impacts the sale process.
