We bought something through Amazon, and it's now failed after a month (and has only been used twice)

Looking through the manual the warranty page says the warranty card must be completed in full, or the warranty will be invalid. It also says the card must be returned within 30 days (today is day 31!)

My understanding is that I have a contract with the seller rather then the manufacturer, and therefore it doesn't matter what the manufacturer says in the manual?

I also can't see how a manufacturer can reject a warranty claim if you have proof of purchase. My consumer right trump the manufacturers warranty?

Would my assumptions be correct?

Contact Amazon through their online chat section. I've found them really good to deal with.

It failed today. We've contacted the seller through Amazon, and it says to give 2 days for a reply.

It was a UK supplier. UK address and two day delivery so definitely not an overseas supplier.

Yep their customer service is top notch and even returning the broken stuff for replacement is easy. One of the reasons they get a lot of my custom!

At the moment we've just reported the problem to the supplier so we'll see how that goes.

The manual says specifically not to return to the supplier, but to contact the local service centre, that's when I spotted the warranty limitation saying the card must be returned withing 30 days. It says nothing on the card though!

I just want to make sure I know my options if the supplier refers me to the manufacturer, and they say tough.

Go back to the seller, ask for a replacement - your contract is with them and your consumer rights are against them.

By supplier I mean seller. That was my first instinct as I've been down the manufacturers warranty route before and they really took the piss with what was an acceptable replacement.

Go to your order on Amazon, go through the return process and ask for a replacement because it has failed.

As I suspected the response was to take it up with the manufacturer under their warranty.

I'll politely decline that option.

Pisses me off that companies still pull this rubbish. In the age of the internet consumer rights are easy to discover, and the legal obligations are crystal clear. frown

Well, I've had nothing short of stellar customer service from Amazon.

They're always happy to replace if you explicitly state you want to deal with them. Happened to me recently with two pairs of £150 headphones. They asked me to reach out to the manufacturer, I said no I'd rather deal with you, so they agreed to replace with next day delivery with no need to return the previous sets for hygiene reasons.

Same here - 11 months into a CTEK charger which failed, they replaced without question and collected the faulty one on the same delivery. Even refunded the difference as the replacement had gone down in price.

Via the Amazon chat - bit difficult to find, but they are very good.

OP there is no harm in taking it up with the manufacturer as well especially if it is Uk based I did this for a failed portable air pump, had a new one in 48 hours.

The warranty card is a non issue, it is really a data collecting exercise and in no way affects the validity of the warranty. I am surprised they are implying that it affects it because it doesn’t

A manufacturer warranty can say anything it wants as it's in addition to your statutory rights.

The retailer has now come back to me and asked me to register the fault with the manufacturer, and they (the seller) will then collect the item from me and will progress it from there which is fair enough.

I've had issues before (unrelated to this one) where I've been directed to a manufacturer, who has then provided an unacceptable solution. The retailer then completely washed their hand of any responsibility as I was dealing with the manufacturer! It was an expensive and infuriating experience that I don't want to repeat.

I have found that Amazon are brilliant when it comes to items they sold themselves, but useless when it comes to items sold by a third party on Amazon. Gave up in the end and when to the manufacturer who again were very good
