V5C - New Keeper and taking registration off vehicle

I'm moving a car on and need to keep the reg. So, this might be a daft question, but can I tell the DVLA the car has a new keeper, plus remove the registration and put that on retention, at the same time with the same V5C?

I'm assuming I can, but just wanted that confirming?

As I understand it, you have to put your plate on retention before you do the keeper change. It is years since I have done it so if I am wrong I am sure someone will be along in a minute to correct me.

No.
After you retain the registration number, the V5 is "out of date" so the DVLA site doesn't see that V5 number as valid.
These days, it doesn't take long for the new V5 to arrive.
Just a pain having to insure a car for a week or so under its new (or original) VRM.

You can do this via the old fashioned postal service, to change keeper and take registration off the vehicle in one hit. I did it earlier this year when I unexpectedly sold my Z4C quickly.

You will need to fill out the Existing V5 for the change of keeper as normal, and post off with it the application form to put the registration onto retention.

One important word of caution though - your new keeper MUST re tax the car in their name before the application reaches the desk of a jobsworth at DVLA, otherwise they will just send the paperwork back to you minus the cheque and you’ll have to resubmit it.

If you fill out the "change of keeper" on the V5c then the new owner also owns the reg number !!!

the only way to do it now is via this link and the wait 3 or 4 days for the new V5c with the old reg number on it .

I took my number off via DVLA online this morning (has to be done between 07:00-19:00 so I lost a day)

Crossing fingers paperwork arrives as “we buy any car” appointment on Tuesday evening

Thanks for the replies. I’ve taken the registration off first as suggested, and the new V5c should be with me in a few days. Good job I checked.
