Motorbike parking on pavement

Hello all

Got a fine for parking my bike on the pavement.



Can anyone advise if that's 100% illegally parked?

Had same thing for parking a scooter on the pavement outside a shop in Chiswick some years ago, there's likely to be some signage somewhere that says you can't do what you did. I didn't know Chiswick and was properly peeved when I got a ticket, argued the toss with the parkie but he wasn't having it and pointed out a sign saying 'no bikes on pavements' or something similar.

Yes, 100% illegally parked. The yellow lines apply from the centre of the road to the edge of the public highway which includes the pavement or verge.

Was going to say the same, from a quick google

“Yellow line restrictions apply to the back of the highway boundary including footways and verges unless a parking area has been designated off the carriageway“

I only parked it there because parking spots are at a premium and I didn't want to take up valuable space. Figured the yellows were there to stop cars parking in the road, which Would obviously completely block the road.

Oh well, that's about 8 beers in fines.

They got you fair and square per the rules, but I wouldn't say you were doing anything wrong in terms of common sense or getting in anyone's way.

Pretty much my argument with the parking drone when I got nabbed, didn't wash.

Not a lawyer (no doubt others will say they guessed that) but I would have thought ‘de minimis’ would apply here? The breach doesn’t affect anyone and the lines were clearly not put there to prevent this situation.

If yellow lines mean “Yellow line restrictions apply to the back of the highway boundary including footways and verges unless a parking area has been designated off the carriageway“ they have been put there to prevent this situation.

Would the feelings be the same if the Astra had parked there?

In my opinion there ought to be more safe 'motorcycle only' parking areas to promote reduced cpngestion in towns, but pavements are for pedestrians.

It looks like this is a later addition - traffic calming? So the real purpose of the lines is to stop cars from further reducing the width of the carriageway. It’s not exactly a useful part of the pavement is it? It’s hard to see that the OP did anything worse than cars putting a wheel on the pavement - something that is routine in many areas and overlooked on a common sense over-riding the strict letter of the law basis.

Why didn’t you just park behind the Astra in the bay where there aren’t any lines?

Although you are technically in the wrong it seems, it’s pretty narrow minded of the traffic warden. The bike isn’t in the way and you are trying to help out by not taking up a space. And they wonder why people tend to dislike traffic wardens.....

If they hadn't put that tree there, they could have removed that naff paving and allowed more people to park along there.

Make your plate removable with a dzus fastener. Take it with you when you park. Worked for me in London for a good 7 + years
