I have 2 homes - my main residence in London and a holiday home in Dorset. The address on my driving licence is my London address.

I'm considering getting a motorbike which I will keep at my holiday home for use whilst I'm there. It's obviously cheaper to insure it with a Dorset postcode than a London one.

I'm not trying to do anything underhand or dishonest - the bike will genuinely spend the vast amount of its time in Dorset and my other vehicles will continue to be insured at my primary residence where they spend most of their time - but will there be any problems in the event of a claim or if I'm stopped by the police and the addresses for the bike differ ?

I imagine the issue will come down to the fact that you don't live in Dorset, so you'll have to give your London address and then declare to the insurer that the bike will be left at another premises all the time.

Just because you own the property, doesn't mean you live there, so I don't think you can tell your insurer you live in Dorset.

The obvious answer is to speak to the insurance company, they might understand why its insured in Dorset.

Correspondence address for paperwork and registration = same as license.

Vehicle stored at address = holiday home.

Insurer will understand. I have the same setup.

Insurance company will ask for additional proof of residence of where the vehicle is usually kept majority of the time - usually two bits of addressed mail like gas/electric/council/bank/BT etc. to prove residence. It prevents people from insuring in a cheaper location and keeping vehicle in another location.

Even easier if your second home is insured with the same company as your vehicle.... their system does the cross check.

Your licence will be in London, any registered keeper address on any V5 should/could be London, or your usual regular address - that is for ease and speed of contact. Any address on the insurance should reflect where the bike is kept and/or where it is regularly used. Why should there be an issue with a fact?

A driving license address does not have to be where you live - it is simply an address through which you can be contacted.

Every insurer I have dealt with asks where the vehicle will NORMALLY be kept, usually with a list to choose from. The only “complication” is you keep the bike at a second address. The easiest solution is to phone the insurer and ask them what they require as your answer to that question. They might ask about security at that address but it shouldn’t be a problem to sort out their information. You are actually giving them true, factual details and not misrepresenting your situation.
