Waze might give you an extra life now and again.
Laser detectors will tell you when you’ve already been pinged.
If you’ve got a lead foot and refuse to acknowledge speed limits, particularly residential ones like 30s, then you’re going to be odds on for points at some point anyway.

would recco waze over laid with pocketworld gps camera alert app 20 a year.....false alerts on pocketworld because all hotspots have been highlighted but if your worried thats a price worth paying
I do a shedload and these days stick to the limits but easy to go over

someone on here must do a lot of miles, maybe they're a rep, they've done it for years, and have a lot of experience of radar/laser detectors, they've probably tried a number over the years, and settled on a make they trust, question is.... which ?

Harsh. Last ticket I got was at dusk, from a plain white van barely visible with the rear windows open zapping people in an area where the speed limit used to be 50 but was now 40.
I used to use a detector, but that was many years ago.....also had a "Drive-Smart", but frankly I just use Waze now.....it certainly knows most 'danger' areas.
& yes, these days I generally stay very close to the limit......but the risk of not spotting one sign just before a camera, maybe obscured by hedgerows or other vehicles, is always there.
Thanks for a decent reply, the other posters are just suggesting I pay more attention, yeah right ! Loads of normal sensible drivers are at risk of penalty points for accidentally going over the limit, it happens, I want to avoid risk where I can.
Not looking like there’s any good devices out there, so will have to be careful and take my chances

Good detectors- well there's ( as mentioned ) eyeball MK1- which detects the little round sign at road side saying the legal speed. But perhaps you need to look at the principles of COASTAdvice on if anyone knows any good radar detectors

C= concentration, courtesy,care & consideration
O= observation
A= Awareness
S=speed
T=TIME ( to react to a problem).
IF you fail to spot a hazard ahead or behind ( speed camera or police vehicle behind) , then PERHAPS it's because you are spending to much time driving BEYOND your capabilities. I'd suggest it's safer ( and cheaper) to slow down till you'r abilities get a bit better.
I'm not preaching, just passing on something from 50+ years of safer driving.
To actually answer the question, a valentine 1 is a good detector. I have one. 15 to 20 years ago, when it was new, I used it loads.
It still sits in my study, but I probably haven't used it at all for over 10 years. It works and is legal in the UK.
However, as others have said, by the time it activates you may have already been caught.
It cannot replace the mk1 eye ball and it is not a magic cure that allows you to drive like a muppet.
I drive far slower and more sensibly now than I did when I was young, so don't feel the need to use a radar detector. Whenever I do a long trip I have a sat nav in the windscreen which warns me about fixed cameras if I do happen to stray over the limit. Or if you navigate by phone, as others have said, use Waze.
