Robbed in France

Short version

Our hotel room got broken into last week in Paris. and various items removed.

I'm looking at suing the Hotel for negligence as it very much looks like a lack of diligence on their part. I wont go into details but clearly there are aspects which are unacceptable

Preferably I need a French/Parisian solicitor to formulate a claim against the hotel - or perhaps a UK practice that's comfortable dealing with the French (in French presumably and knows the legal side of this) does anybody have any suggestions?

Why not claim on your travel insurance?

You've been stolen from, not robbed. As the other poster says claim from your travel insurance. And speak to the police if you haven't done already.

OP - have the police completed thier investigation and established the negligence of the hotel was the cause? I wouldn’t expect to get very far without that.

The Police were called and they attended almost immediately - the room was then fingerprinted etc. Later four armed police attended and 'interviewed' myself and my fiancee.

I attended the Local police station the day after to lodge a 'complaint' - took the best part of a day.

I've taken some advice and the result is the request here. I won't go into the specific reasoning here (obviously) but my understanding is that under French Law the hotel is liable (given the circumstances) but I need further advice on that - again why I posted the thread

Robbed, burgled or stolen from? I don't mind or care which is the best description I wasn't looking for any shock value

I would say that if you did not report it to the police and get a police report you will not get very far with anything in France.

I did and have all the paperwork necessary I believe. It's also not the first time this establishment has suffered this sort of 'unfortunate' incident IYKWIM

Then that's for your insurance company to chase. Make a claim and let them deal with it.

It is emotive for you but just claim off insurance, objects can be replaced.

Is it an inside job, ie maid service / leaving door / room unattended or do you think just hotel reception letting smelly scrotes know when the Ros Beef is out and about?

Is it worth just claiming on travel insurance etc, then just slag the hotel off on trip advisor facebook etc. Seems a lot of trouble to go to unless you've had some serious st nicked.
French legal system is pretty lengthy, does protect the consumer very well, but some cases take years and years. I know a chap who bought an Audi auto with gbox issues and took the garage to court, won, court seized the car, garage ordered to repay, went bust, did not pay and the Audi has sat for over 7 years now in an underground CP in paris whilst chap is now chasing the garage owner personally. Madness for what was less than €10k car with a €1500 gbox ecu issue!

Why mention the armed police ?

All the national police and gendarmerie are armed .
