The son and heir is getting a slow-ped next week but he isn't 16 until next year.

If his name is on the V5, I can insure it but can I also tax it so I can relive my yoof thrashing 50ccs everywhere potter around the local roads on it?

Surely it doesn't matter who pays for the tax , as long as It's been paid before it hits the street,

That would seem sensible so probably isn't what would happen... just worried that some computer would check the name on the V5, see that the name on the insurance was different and the say "no" (hence the question)

You seem confused.
Is your question about tax or insurance?

I've taxed and insured a car that had a V5 in my son's name without any comeback.

If you're going old skool by going to the Post Office ,they don't even look at insurance documents and I'm fairly sure they

don't have access to names on their "system"

The name on the V5 is irrelevant as far as VED is concerned.

Insurance is a tricky one. Who is main user. I'd check that one out. VED- I don't think DVLA care as long as thy get the cash.

Correct, the name on the V5 is irrelevant to the who pays the RFL but it is not irrelevant to the insurance.

I has same scenario for Miss Solo when I bought her first car months before she was 17 so I had to register the car in my name so I could insure it, then when she was old enough to drive and get her own insurance I had to change it to her name thereby adding an owner.

No way around that unfortunately with the insurance company I used but it's worth asking who you insure the bike with if they care.

I have never had a problem disclosing to the insurance company that I am the actual owner and main user of the vehicle despite not being the registered keeper.

I thought the law was about the age at which one can drive, not about who can own a vehicle.
So you should have been able to register the car in Miss Solo's name but you would have to insure it and declare you don't own the vehicle (standard question on proposal forms).
Caveat: I could be wrong.

It's completely dependant on the insurer in my experience. Some insurers simply don't offer insurance for anybody other than the registered keeper but some do.

The winglet acquired a car shortly before his 17th, reg'd and insured (he was policy holder) it in his name, no problem.

Me and the handbrake on policy as named drivers.

I drove it home from the dealer.

Ready for that first drive on his 17th Birthday.bounce

The DVLA online system doesn't care less who pays the VED as long as someone does, payment can come from BOMAD, the goldfish, your mate down the pub, whoever has the right paperwork to hand can do it.

As an update, it now appears that my insurance people won't insure me on a bike that doesn't have my name on the V5, nor will anyone else on the many comparison websites I tried either.

I can ride it if it's insured by some one else however, the teanager can't get insurance yet so we're stuffed.

Time to buy a few more big locks, and wait for a couple of months..
