Anyone with Sheffield camera van local knowledge?

Good morning,

It's been a while since I posted in here, and I'm seriously considering changing my name to the far more accurate Bryan51 :-) that went a bit fast!
Anyway, driving to Sheffield from Doncaster this morning and as the M18-M1 North slip road emerges from the underpass, we are into a temporary 50 zone. Maybe 100 yards after this there was a highways van parked on the hard shoulder, yellow lights flashing on the roof, and as I passed it, it had windows open in the back doors with some sort of mirror/lens assembly visible, didn't look like what you usually see.
If it's a speed van, I've never seen one 'dressed up' like this, and wondered if anyone had any knowledge.
I'm pretty sure I didn't hit the 50's at 50, probably about 60 ish, hence the concern.
Technically my own fault, but it's a bit cheeky if it was a speed van!

I am assuming that there are roadworks there, if there is a temporary 50 limit?

If so, it could be to enforce the site speed limit for the contractors vehicles - Had them on the M60 when they were converting it to a managed motorway. These were dressed as Hiways maintenance vans, but on the side it did say something like on site enforcement.

ah well, see if anything drops through the post. It's been 17 years since the last speeding ticket, so probably due one.

Hi boys...

The camera van is real.... I spotted it AFTER DARK on Monday evening (16:30 ish), luckily I was doing below the temporary limit of 50.

In the dark it is impossible to spot until you are within 20 yards of it.

It pleases me to know that South Yorkshire Police have enough resources to deploy a camera van on a temporary speed limit perhaps 500 yards long, at night when there are no pedestrians and no site workers to protect...

It's obviously quite a lucrative spot as they have returned...

I can sleep safely in my bed knowing that people going about their normal business are be brought to book for displaying wrong numbers on their dashboards on this well known accident black-spot...

Or are they just after funds for the annual drink drive campaign, due to be launched soon...

Didn't have my dash cam on so don't know my actual speed. If they are getting people who haven't slowed enough crossing the 50 line, it smacks a lot like money grabbing, not so much safety.

If it's a highways agency van as the OP says in his first post, then it's not a speed camera van is it, quite possibly site speed checking which is done from time to time

Makes me feel a bit better. Again never seen an enforcement van with flashing amber/yellow lights on the top, and no mention of 'camera/safety/casualty' on the side. Just 'highways....'. But, it did have some optics behind an open back door window.
