Signing an item as unchecked

I ordered a shower screen online, it came smashed, they have replaced it no problem but they asked if the item was signed as unchecked or damaged. It made me curious, could the supplier wriggle out of refunding a customer if the item was not signed as damaged or unchecked? I know some people always sign for items as 'unchecked' but does this stand up in law?

We get dozens of deliveries a day, none of the machines have the facility to add ‘unchecked’ so I’m told by the drivers... so it’s either sign or refuse delivery. Pretty pointless IMO.

I did have a TV delivered though and the condition was that the courier opens the box and checks the screen, then rang the company to inform them TV was delivered and the dispatch manager then had to speak to me to confirm all was well. Very different experience to normal and it was the same when I bought a second tell a week later from them .

That takes some skill!
Perhaps I'm too sausage-fingered or have a John Hancock signature but I barely manage to squeeze half my squiggle onto the screen!

My parents had a summer house delivered and when I signed it said 'I confirm it is delivered undamaged'.

As I wasn't able to check it (or aware it was being delivered!) I just crossed that out and said unable to check.

But that's tricky, if not impossible to do if the courier has a tablet and stylus where you just have a small space to make your mark.

It does seem a bit of a catch 22.
