Speeding fine Austria

Not exactly headline news so more of a heads up for those driving overseas. I remember getting flashed between two tunnels in Austria, quick speedo check and I was no more than 10kmh over. Happened on 18 Aug, letter arrived yesterday stating offence of speeding but no details of where, by how much or pictures of the perpetrator just the VRN. 50 euros.

Stand to be corrected of course, but I think the data is also shared between EU countries, so it may show up as an outstanding penalty even if driving in Germany for example.
Again, to be corrected if necessary - the debt can even work its way over to the UK if the Austrian authorities wish to chase it. It will appear as a 'debt collector' rather than a 'bailiff' - which have different powers.

Just checking, did you get a Vignette for the autobahns?
If not they charge you 120 euros I think it was, the vignette is 80 for a year, the 120 euro fine doesn't include a vignette so you have to buy one on top meaning you pay 200 instead of 80 for a year... I found out the expensive way when I forgot to attach a new one in the new year!

I think that must be with the 15kmh limit taken into account already, pretty sure that's how they do it but could be wrong.I usually have Waze running when i'm on unfamiliar roads as it warns you of the speed changes, which aren't often very clear here.
Doesn't say anything on the letter and googling seems inconsistent with tolerances from 5-20%. I have Waze but don't use it, the system in the car is (or so I thought) pretty good at camera locations. Doesn't Waze eat through data though? I can use it it's just that I don't like it covering the whole screen and if I could split it would probably use it more I guess.

Unless the tolerance is different per state, I know certain rules definitely differ per state and the tickets are paid into whichever state/department bank you are in when you commit the offence I think.Waze does use data but cant imagine its that much, I have a work phone thankfully so never have to worry about it. You can perhaps download maps to use offline, but never checked. Google bought Waze apparently and will be incorporating the speed warnings etc into google maps at some point from what I read.
Need to be careful of mobile speed checks here, they can hide and don't wear hi viz so harder to spot than in UK, other day in Vienna one was hiding behind a bus stop peeking round the edge with the speed gun, another was sat in his people carrier parked up on the side of a busy road in among other cars and was sitting catching people as they came towards him.
Best one was when the trains weren't running on the railway heading out of Vienna to where I stay, which meant much more traffic than normal along the massive three lane autobahn (which is limited to 80kmh for some strange reason!) There are bridges over the road which are often pedestrian ones leading to the Danube, except a police van was hiding behind one of the big signs on the side with a speed gun peeking over the top, never seen one there before so assume they were cashing in on the extra traffic that day! w
