You should always report the collision, even just for information purposes only. Then settle out of insurance if you desire.

I did a similar thing , offered a chap a decent sum to cover repair on his door on an old car that was actually probably worth less than the cost of a proper repair and everyone was happy.

you say your car is a bit scarred, but what about the other one? is there a chance that they take it for repair and discover that it is going to be hugely expensive? (eg cracked chrome effect plastic trim or similar)? Classic is you come to a reaonable arrangement and then the other party is convinced by a partner or know-all friend to cover themselves by insisting on insurance route.

regardless of whether a claim is made, it's a collision and may (unlikely as it is) affect op's premium. Under the terms of their policy I'm sure op should report it, but in the real world it sounds like a lot of faff for something that won't even breach the excess so why have the hassle

In the real world. I had a similar scrape. I reported it, and settled privately. No issues, or on-costs later. That was four years ago.

I know most insurance policies state you should always tell them of a collision no matter what but I also thought the point of insurance excess was to dissuade people from claiming such minor issues if a few body shop quotes are less than the excess.

I wouldn't class ringing the insurance company and giving them the details as a lot of faff, to save them potentially bringing up the fact it wasn't reported in the future and getting out of paying out if they ever wanted to.
