As most posters do on the renewal date ,I ask the Meerkats for quotes. One stood out as being a lot lower monthly and a few quid higher on deposit making the overall annual cost a lot less. It turned out that both brokers were using the same company. So I cancelled my policy before renewal and took out a policy as a "brand new company". I paid ( or at time thought I had) the deposit on my new policy and I had the option to defer payment till a month later, as I had two options on payment dates. Being near Xmas I decided to have a look on DD payments etc and discoveredthat no car insurance DD had been taken on this new policy . More bad news, Askmid tells me that car is not on the MID register. Bank has no details of payment or of DD setup. good news is that I've not had a stop or that DVLA has not declined VED due to no insurance .( I oft wonder if they are really interested).
I immediately sought quotes to keep car on road legally. But that raises a big Q. Is car insured or not, as if it is technically, It can't be insured with two companies. Askmid man says not insured.
So how can I find out ,quickly.

Insurance check is no longer carried out when VED is purchased.

As for whether you are insured or not, the only way to be certain is to phone the insurer.

Loads of situations where two policies cover the same driver / car combination - most policies will have a clause setting out priority for these situations...

Don’t get sidelined by the two insurances thing. You need to find out whether you even have one!

For the benefits of those engaging fingers without engaging gear- please read words of wisdom from the car insurers

https://www.admiral.com/magazine/guides/car-insura...

Find out why you can't have two insurance policies, and how you could end up committing fraud if you do

Can you insure a car twice?

It's certainly not impossible, and it's not illegal, but that doesn't mean that you should choose to do it.

In fact, doubling up on your insurance is not only potentially costly but it could cause real problems should you ever need to make a claim.

Contribution clauses mean that both insurers would be in contact with each other to see how much they each need to put towards your pay-out, and there's no guarantee that they will agree. Such cases can delay your claim significantly, causing you an entirely unnecessary and avoidable headache.

Making a claim from two insurers can push up the price of your renewal significantly, as well as seeing you lose your no-claims bonus across both providers. It's also worth remembering that you can't claim for a full amount from multiple insurers, as that's fraud.

One claim is all you can make, so why make it complicated by involving multiple different companies?

SO- any words of wisdom from those in the know, PLEASE .

There was a lengthy thread on this very subject in SP&L in the last month or so. HERE

If it is insured twice or not, or if that is legal would be of secondary concern to me.
All you need to do is phone the first insurance company this morning and establish if it is insured. If not insure it.
Not quite sure why you are making this so complicated.

It's certainly not impossible, and it's not illegal, but that doesn't mean that you should choose to do it.

How incredibly silly to write an article headlined "why you can't have two insurance policies" and then in the first line confirm that you can, indeed, have two insurance policies.

As the article says, it is perfectly possible to have two insurance polices on one car. It's not a great idea - it means paying twice for the same amount of cover, and it can make a claim more complicated than it needs to be - but it doesn't make your cover invalid or mean that you're uninsured. That's all that matters for the purposes of the question that you actually asked. If you but another policy this morning for immediate start then yes, you will definitely be insured. However, it would make more sense to phone the other company first and find out what the problem is with the policy you thought you had - it might be easily fixable.

The OP seemed to be worried he might not have a policy, but seemed worried about taking out a 2nd one, in case the first was still in force. My point was he can take out a second policy. At least then he'd know he was insured, and would be breaking no laws.

It might not be a great idea to have 2 policies, or 20 policies, but it's far better idea than having none.

Twig- I did solve the problem. I have found no sign of the DD I know exists, but I went to the webmail pages and under one account I found I'd saved a quote from the meerkats. I contacted the Broker and it turned out they found the deposit , and confirmed I had cover. Somehow the DD had been lost, but the Broker confirmed details and waived the missing instalments, giving me the policy at the price quoted. PHEW- Askmid was showing me as an uninsured driver. To me ( and others on here) the scum of the motoring world.I'm still listed on Askmid as not insured, but i now have a company prepared to stand up for me.
To me anyone can make a mistake- excellent customer service starts by accepting that mistake and rectifying it without any problems.
