Found Bike

on my way to the shop yesterday found a bike dumped on the pavement, coming back 45 min later it was still there so tapped on some doors and then phoned the police to report it, can you take it home, the really nice operator asked

So I wheeled the bike home and 30 minutes later got a text from the police that no one has reported the bike missing, that the police have no facilities to collect or store the cycle and to dispose of it at my conveyance.

I have contacted a local charity to collect the bike but what happens if someone returns home in a day or week or so, notices their shed had been brcken into and the bike taken?

There were a whole load of changes to lost property at the beginning of last year. As long as you made a "reasonable attempt" personal items are yours for the keeping these days.

Keys
Jewellery

Personally I have an issue with the "reasonable attempt" etc - because what is reasonable to one person may not be to another.

Did you give the Police the bike's frame number?

I found some folded £10 notes last Christmas and rang the local police informing them. They asked me to drop it into the station, after apologising for not trusting them I suggested they keep my number and should someone report it lost they should ring me with the amount and the unusual way they were folded, I spent it after it sat on a shelf for 3 months.

Not got a local Facebook page you can post you have found it on? Ideally not with a picture so anyway claiming it will need to describe it to you!

This. My local FB page often has “lost” items ...not usually bikes (they usually come up as stolen when it happens) but keys, wallets, bus passes etc. Often results in owners being reunited with their things.
