Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this?
Whilst on holiday in France I became ill & was hospitalised for a number of weeks, during this time the tax & mot ran out on my car.
I returned to UK by air, as my illness prevented me from driving.I now have to return to France to collect the car. I can drive from France to home in a day, if I book an mot test for the day of my return will I be road legal?
I have researched the gov. web site & as far as I can see as long as I am travelling to a pre-booked appointment I’m legal ( no restrictions on distance) however my friends and the missus disagree.
Any thoughts?

I seem to remember reading about this in the past and there being mention of 'reasonable' distance - but im working from memory rather than knowledge when i say that so i might be wide of the mark.
I expect a traffic cop isnt going to be impressed if you're caught driving a car in london which is booked for an MOT in Inverness..... but not sure of the actual legalities of it.

As for France, I know that the vehicle has to be legal from the country it is registered in, whenever I’ been stopped in France I’ve only been asked for log book, insurance and license.
Hope to go over early next month, Will post again if any problem .

If the London cop is impressed or not, it's allowed.
Both above, based on the car being in a roadworthy condition.

If tax ran out a while ago and you're not going to collect it until next month sorn it or you'll receive a penalty for no tax. I'd be more worried about leaving the car parked anywhere as it is liable to being clamped by the DVLA - and they are incredibly quick when notified of a car with no tax being parked on a public road. So just drive straight there or park on private land if you need a long break.
Can't see the French or UK police being too worried about the MOT as they can see you are trying to get it resolved and simple extending a right we all have, that we can drive to a pre booked MOT test without tax or an MOT. Reason being they still have every right to do an on the spot 'MOT' and act accordingly if your car has some defects.
