But, in all seriousness having spent over 30 years in the Police ... many many of them on GMP’s traffic unit, having spent many hours sat In X5’s probably even on the that bridge .. knowing the roles, specs and equipment carried by those vehicles I’d probably say what comes out of my arse is more relevant than what comes out of your mouth

Genuine question for those who have actually done the job:-
I remember coming out of Marlow (TVP) a year or two back, and there was a police motorcycle parked up towards the end of the 30mph limit aiming what I assumed was a speed gun at traffic leaving the town. Would he have been monitoring speeds, or collecting evidence for prosecutions?

Bikes were generally used for enforcement. Parked up with a hand held laser it would likely be enforcement. The device sat snugly in the pannier to be taken out and used with ease
Check speed .. step out .. number one stop and motorist dealt with there and then.
The bikes are equipped with calibrated Speedo’s and moving detection equipment for either measuring distance/time between two fixed points or for follow speeds. A few are fitted with video, but most aren’t
Where I worked enforcement had to be at “community concern” sites so if a report of people speeding at a location was made then what we called “silent checks” would be made and the results reported back, but no prosecutions. A decision would then be made depending on the results whether to conduct live enforcement at that location.
Today, many forces have got rid of their bikes and those that still have them have massively reduced their use to mainly events/security roles/Firearms
Speed enforcement is normally from vans or fixed cameras not mobile patrols these days

This is rubbish. Speaking as a current cop we often NIP drivers without stopping them. The new lasers has in built cameras but we still can and do NIP when using the older lasers without cameras. king.If they didn’t get pulled then you’ll hear nothing.

Granted they're more than likely going to stop someone if they were issuing a ticket as it's easier and no need to postal NIP but we can and do NIP without stopping drivers.
