A probate question?

A close friend died recently and thus far I don't think a Will's been discovered. He's married but his wife lives in another town. He always tried to get back together with her despite her having some drink and mental issues. They remained in constant communication.

His daughter has recently been on the scene to help when he took ill. She to lives in another town. Already I can see the two sides lining up for a share of the spoils.

My basic question is, does his wife have an automatic right to inherit his estate? In my mind I'm sure he'd want her to have everything but maybe in some way offer something to his daughter somehow/sometime.

We're all going to snuff it one day.

One of the best things you can do is spare your loved ones/friends the grief of an intestacy. Make a will. Changing it is no big beal if you change your mind.

Why? She should be in for half of the the estate, was she the daughter of both or just the deceased?

According to the Ugov link the wife gets everything up to £250k and thereafter 50% of the rest. So the daughter will get 50% of not a lot if I understand it correctly. The daughter is the daughter of the deceased, not the wife.
