Ambulance with Police Car Following

On the way up to Peterborough today I saw going southbound an ambulance with its blue lights on. Behind it also with blue lights on was a police car. In my rear view mirror I could see that the information display in the rear window of the police car had writing on it but obviously not what it said.
So would the police occasionally escort ambulances? It made me wonder how prisoners get to hospital and whether they go in an ambulance with a police escort?

Could be for quite a few reasons.
Following up a victim of an assault, police officer in the ambo with the victim with colleague following.
Could be an officer in the back helping with CPR from an incident
Could have someone in custody in the back that has to go to hospital.
Family member of someone in a seriously bad way being taken to hospital.
It's fairly common.

You forgot to mention if it was flying like foooook to get somewhere or going 5MPHish to carry someone in a dodgy state and didn't want rear ending by an idiot so had a police car 'crash cushion'.Reasons why I’ve followed an ambulance with my lights on....
Someone being worked on in the back by paramedic and my colleague due to serious RTC.
Following with family in my vehicle while they’re loved one is off to hospital.
Following without lights after the patient was assaulted and deteriorated so lights went on.
Escorting someone with mental health issues and they’re very unstable.
There’s been a few times when so many paramedics have been required in the rear of the ambulance that I’ve driven the ambulance to the hospital or driven the rapid response ambulance to the hospital or base.
Mostly whenever there’s a requirement for police and mostly at the request of paramedics. Sometimes just to help out a family who may have limited time to see someone before they pass and that’s at my own discretion.
When they’ve offered me Christmas lunch back at their base. I’m lying, but it would be nice.
