potholes.

Locally ,and possibly nationally, I see posts about the state of our roads.
I've reported lots of potholes and I notice a lot on my morning drive, where the potholes ( sometimes are caverns) are marked up with spray.
Usual defence by LA is that road had been inspected in accordance with regulations, but in this case, they knew ,and had failed to repair in a reasonable time.
I'm getting sick of having to go wide on one corner to miss two deep holes , with the possibility of a head on.

To be honest I think there has been an improvement in the last 12 months.

Or I’ve acclimatised to it, where about a are you based?

By heck do you live in Cheshire East ? as well the most incompetent "Highway authority" known to man alongside Essex unfortunately both subcontractored out to the "PRIVATE" sector unde the auspices of RINGWAY JACOBS.

I’m sure the 4 people who hit the 5 gigantic potholes and popped tyres on the m25 last Thursday are feeling that. Never seen such an appalling stretch of motorway surface. Somewhere near Heathrow anti clockwise.

Local lane badly potholed after major diversion saw large buses use it - not enough space for two way traffic as the lane is quite narrow. After the heavy traffic, it became badly - very badly - potholed. Reported by many people but as it's a lane, the county wouldn't do anything about it.

Until...... the council head's driver (who lived in our village and knew the state of the road) used the lane to get from one official trip to another. And "accidentally" hit a pothole and trashed a tyre and wheel. Result? Council official late for his appointment, and the lane is now scheduled to be resurfaced.

And yes, we bought the driver a pint or three!

Quite a few potholes reported in our village and the standard response is "Our recent inspection of this issue has prioritised it as not as serious as some of the other defects we are aware of, so we have recorded it and will consider it when we are planning future works in the area."

However, there was a meeting in the village last week between parish councillors, district councillor, county councillor and a representative of Highways about a different highways issue and it was admitted that no-one from Highways had actually inspected anything in the village since 2018 and their decisions were based solely on the photos and reports submitted by the public.

I dont think I've ever seen more this last month. Not just tiddly jobs but man swallowers and as a biker, some right on the ride line. Scary.

Recently reported one after trashing a tire and no sign of it or any of the others on the same stretch even being paint marked.
Council did say I could do an insurance claim for it of I want but assuming they'll say they haven't been negligent.
Despite the mild winter roads generally seem to have really suffered this year.

Don't hold your breath. Just had the same issue. Not previously reported, so couldn't be inspected. Apparently it has a precedence in Law

As a counter to that I live on the borders between Trafford and Cheshire East and the difference is night and day. Cheshire East's standards are immeasurably higher than Traffords and probably most of the Manchester authorities. Rarely does a pothole stay for long, and when they do repairs they tend to be full patch repairs either covering half the carriageway if not fully.

In the rarest of occasions when Trafford can be arsed to undertake repairs they slough some tarmac in and leave it standing nicely proud. I've driven on better dirt tracks in some countries than the roads in Trafford, especially those around the airport and Wythe hospital. Despite repeated threats from the Labour led council that they'll tear up the Tory-signed contract with Amey it has yet to materialise. Presumably because they realise it's not that straightforward.

I've reported serious potholes on my road a few times, and got that response - but in fact, they were fixed very quickly. Albeit not very well - I need to report a couple more!

It's up to you, but I wouldn't make that assumption. I blew two tyres on a pothole a couple of years ago - I put a claim into the local council and they paid up (-10% betterment).

There are potholes everywhere. They seem to be reported much more often on Waze and having just returned from Somerset on the A303 the pothole warnings came up thick and fast - much more frequently than the speed camera alerts - and probably having an even greater effect than the cameras themselves to slow people down. Nobody wants to hit a dark hole at 70mph - particularly when it is dark and wet.

I reported this earlier this week. You can see evidence of previous st repair. But we’re paying. It’s in a bus gate area to so vary hard to avoid because of deliberately narrowed lane

Might give it a go then, I'm a bit ambivalent with councils being cash strapped but right now so am I and I spend mine better...

The heavy flow is washing the edges away which causes the edges to crumble away, when a pothole is full of water and hit it forces the water at pressure towards the edges causing these to break up and it just gets worse.

Here in Cambridgeshire there are more potholes than I have ever seen before.
However, whilst the Cambs CC claim they are short of cash for fixing them, they have plenty to spare for those stupid 'Electronic Speed Indicator Devices' and for 'pollution generating speed bumps and chicanes'.
