Direct debit - any right to a refund?

Pay for a service in advance, have cancelled wef 1/4/20 but payment already taken by DD mid March. I have no 'contract' with this company as they have recently bought out the original firm. I have cancelled the DD but have no need for the service from now onwards. Have asked for a refund of my DD - are they obliged to provide it?

You will have been given the terms of the Direct Debit guarantee. If the DD has been taken outwith the terms you signed up for the BANK refunds the money. Pronto. Just contact them and ask.

Your presumption that you have no contract with the company because it bought out the previous company needs more homework before you do something silly. It's probably wrong.
