90 in a 70 - 6 points £576 Fine

Was stopped for speeding, 90 in a 70 - NIP stated that the speed limit was 70mph.
Sent off paperwork, received letter back from court stating that due to exceeding the 50pmh limit I've got 6 points & £576 fine - clean license previously.
As the speed limit was 70mph is there any point in my contesting? If so how do I contest it?
The offence code is SP30

What speed limit is the road? What vehicle were you in? Was it a van with a lower limit?
90 in a 70 would normally be fixed penalty speeds unless you had nine or more points already which you don't.
It could be they made a mistake on the NIP (no it won't change anything).
Won't hurt to give the courts or ticket office of the police a ring to find out.

If the points/fine is appropriate I'll just live with it but I was thinking they might be basing my outcome on a 50mph limit but then I'd be looking at a ban I suppose oh well!

No overhead signs or anything like that at the part of the M20 I was on - I was approaching the M25 Swanley Interchange heading to London, NIP stated the speed of the road was 70mph.Collection order says: 1 /Exceed 50mph speed limit in contravention of local traffic order - manned equipment
That says to me that they're under the impression the road has a 50mph limit? I'm not trying to get out of paying anything just want to make sure what I'm being prosecuted for is correct.

I’ve never dealt with him, we’ve had very occasional differences of opinion, sit on “opposite sides”, but if I needed motoring offence advice, he’d be the first person I’d speak to.

Are you confusing a speeding ticket with a NIP?
If you were stopped by a police officer at the roadside, then your NIP was verbal, and you were issued a speeding ticket. They don't write out a NIP at the roadside.
If on the other hand, you received a NIP through the post, are you sure it's not for a second speeding offence, caught on camera, and not the one you were stopped for by the Police?
Something doesn't add up!

Based on the mixed information posted by Sea Demon (receiving a NIP despite being stopped by a Police Officer at the roadside, being charged with exceeding a 50mph speed limit, when the road he was stopped on was a 70mph motorway, and being charged with an SP30 offence code instead of an SP50), I'm still suspecting that there could be more than one prosecution coming his way!
