Planned power outage during lockdown...

Possibly not the right area...

One of the local landowners is building a new farm, in a few weeks time they will be connecting the transformer to the mains. As a result SSE have informed us that the power will be out for c4 hours on a Monday between 10:00 and 14:00 apprx.

I have called up the SSE helpline to see if this time or date can be moved given a lot of us are now WFH on a more or less permanent basis; I was told that these things are arranged months in advance and moving it is practically impossible/unheard of..they gave me the direct number for the project manager but he never answers/calls back.

Normally I would suck it up and move on, however my thoughts now are:

• Given the pandemic and people WFH, why can't it be done right at the beginning or end of the day? (ie, not right over the busiest parts)
• Why not a weekend?
• If it has to go ahead, do the impacted people have the right to expect some kind of redress? (again, I'm not normally on the compensation bandwagon - but why should I and the other 60 impacted properties lose a days holiday/productivity because of a new connection?)
• Am I being unreasonable?

You're not on the compo bandwagon but you're already exaggerating for effect. Or do you actually only work for 4 hours over lunchtime? On second thoughts, fk 'me. Kick up a massive fuss and get it moved to a time which is more convenient to you. It's not like farms are useful, is it? You're FAR more important than mere food production!

Do it at the weekend when more people will be at home and they'll have to pay overtime to the works crew who almost certainly don't normally work weekends?

if he's anything like me he can't - there'll be reports and deadlines to be run/received/posted. TBF the mobile hot-spot isn't a bad shout

Pretty much the sort of responses I was expecting!

The issue is that I have to move a load of meetings etc that impact a lot of people beyond SSE's scope, just so farmer can have his power connected by the end of lunch?

I already work from 07:00 most days.

Just don't like being told what will happen, with no consultation, so that someone can add another farm to their portfolio.

You said they'd given a few weeks notice - have you really got a load of meeting with a lot of people arranged that far in advance, and crammed into a 4 hr period?

If it's that vital then don't WFH that day.

You'd have hated me then (even though I'm a house owner with not much money) .. Supplier turned off electricity to half our village for 8 hours to sort out our supply issues last year.. Our power didn't go off at all.

I don't have a choice sadly, WFH unless I am at risk in the property... nature of my role means that I cannot plan that far in advance as it involves a lot of incident response etc.

Will probably take it as a days leave.

If they have had the appropriate notice (And assuming unlike a site I saw a few weeks ago where the supplier had sent the notice to the mast and the postman had wedged it in the gate), the operator is aware they should sort a generator for the day.

The advice is, and was to WFH 'if possible.'

In my experience planned outages often over-run to so don't open your fridge or freezer door either, although they'd be fine for 8 hrs ish I'd have thought.

And there is the OPs solution. Plug an extension cable in to the mobile companies generator and run it home! 😂🤣😂
