They extend it when it gets to within 7 days. Check it here:
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/
Be aware that if you let the original date run out, when an MoT test is carried out, if it fails, it is immediately invalid.

'Normally,' unless it is dangerous, it could be used until the original expiry date while you get it fixed.

I have just re-taxed my car and arranged for an MOT but the earliest the garage can do the MOT is in a week's time. I need to use the car before then.
Leaving the current extension situation aside for now.....I am a bit puzzled by your post. You say you have "just re-taxed" your car so presumably this means you done it 2 weeks ago to take effect from 1st June.
Also what would be the problem in waiting a week for an MOT? Surely you have not waited till less than a week from your current MOT expiry to arrange a new one?

Bit complicated and not really relevant . Thanks to ncjones. The car is mot'd til Oct.11,2020.You say you have "just re-taxed" your car so presumably this means you done it 2 weeks ago to take effect from 1st June.

There is no such thing as a 'current MOT expiry'. Any MOT which has/will expire any when after March now automatically has 6 months added to it. No MOT will expire until they change the rules again. You say you have "just re-taxed" your car so presumably this means you done it 2 weeks ago to take effect from 1st June.

However in the OPs case I'm guessing the car was off the road for the winter (or for what ever reason) and he now wishes to return it to use - whereby it'll need tax and MOT.

So if it's MOTd until October, why the need/urgency to get it done now? In your OP, you said it was because you wanted to use it - what's stopping you using it now? It's taxed, it's MOTd - I don't get it...?littleredrooster said:

My MOT was extended to October but I opted to have the MOT next week. My reasons for not waiting until October are that I suspect October will be very busy at the MOT test centres and secondly, I wanted to ensure my car is roadworthy. NGee said:

Of course i know about the current rules because i menioned it in my post.
Also there is no place for guessing here......a post needs to include enough information so that guessing should not be necessary, otherwise a question needs to be asked.

Your car has a valid mot until OctoberBeing booked on for a test has no bearing on that you can use the car

I may have misunderstood what you mean here, but my understanding of the government guidance is that if you take your car for a test before it expires (and before it extends), it won't be extended if it fails (of course it wont need an extension if it passes as it will be valid for 12 months!). I suggest that if your MOT has already been extended and you then test less than a month before the extended expiry then normal rules would apply. This won't apply to anyone until the end of August.https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-m...

No it doesn't. If a car fails its MoT test, unless it is dangerous, you can still drive it until the original MoT expires. This helps in getting a car fixed. BUT, if it is past its original MoT date and into the 6 month extension, it cannot be driven legally if it fails a test. The link I put up specifically says this:
"Your MOT extension will no longer apply if you take your vehicle for its MOT and it fails.
Your vehicle will need to be fixed and pass its MOT before you can use it again."

I see I am not the only one who is confused by 2 usernames apparently posting as the same person in this thread.
Presumably it is 2 usernames apparently posting as two completely different people who both happen to have MOTs ending in October.
Lets face it, 1 in 6 people on here now have an MOT ending in October!!
(Although I still don't see why you'd want to renew it now!)

Eh?? If a June MoT is extended by 6 months, it is now December. They haven't ALL been extended to the same date in October.Lets face it, 1 in 6 people on here now have an MOT ending in October!!

Indeed not.
My car was 3 years a couple of days ago, and the MOT is extended now to December.
The dealer has just opened again, and they were really trying to push me to get the MOT done. I know it is a money spinner for nothing, but why would I throw away 6 months of MOT (and therefore £27 in a way) to get it done early. Their answer was to avoid hassle for me in 6 months time ...
Think I can manage that, thanks.

You can only MOT a vehicle up to one month before the MOT expires. If the MOT is due in October you wont be able to have it done until September.
I can't see what the problem with getting your car MOT'd garages are open now . I called the garage where I go for my MOT's and was told to bring it down anytime.
