Hire car in Spain after SP30 DQ

Hi all, I hope your all safe + well in this challenging period of Covid-19!

I was caught speeding on my R1 in Feb 2019 at double the speed limit, 124 in a 60mph road. I was In front of the magistrate in June 2019 to answer for my crime and held my hands up and apologised, I’m 28 and have been driving for 10 years with no previous points or penalties, I’ve got a completely clean licence since the age of 17 that was just a stupid mistake.

I held my hands up to the court and apologised, received a fine of £1000 and got a 14 day DQ with no points (SP30) Lesson learnt....

I booked my BMW in for a service earlier this week (22nd June 2020). BMW was unable to put me in a courtesy vehicle due to the SP30 14 day DQ on my licence was voiding the insurance.

My question is; I am due to fly to Spain on Thursday 2nd July 2020 and was wanting to hire a cheap small vehicle to save me getting a taxi to my apartment. I know previously in Spain the hire company in the airport have scanned my licence and returned it with no online checks carried out. I’m concerned I Will have trouble collecting my hire car if I was to pre book one now, resulting in a loss of money.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nope, even companies in the UK are not clear.

Different company’s quote different endorsements and points etc. Nothing for company’s abroad...

I always book through Do You Spain and sort the insurance in advance. If you've done that there's nothing to worry about when you collect the car. The insurance is way cheaper than what the hire company will charge you as well (note you need to decline their insurance when you collect the car as they'll try to sell you more).
I suppose it would be easer with theirs in the event of a claim but its 4 times the price. Make sure you take photos of the car before you take it, nearly every car I've rented had existing damage. All have been nearly new (various hire companies).

From memory aren't you 'supposed' to get/download a form from the DVLA which is good for 3 weeks (I think) stating how valid your licence is/listing endorsements etc? You then show this to the car hire company abroad. It replaces the paper part of the licence which was scrapped some years ago.

In reality though and having hired several times in Spain since this came in, I have never been asked for it and they just took a copy of my DL as the OP states.

I reckon you'd be OK personally.

I’ve never done this either, most Spanish hire car companies just want your money tbh.

I suppose chances are it’ll be fine. It’ll only become a problem if you have a big accident.

We hire out cars in Nerja (Malaga Province). On UK licences we allow 10 points but no IN1O's or DD's. We only have 19 older cars and our rates are very cheap so limits on insurance cover keep the premiums down. Some larger companies will only scan a licence to check its valid and that's it but their ins will be very much higher.
We have a friend in Mallorca (Max Cars) who does the same, cheap rates, older cars, limits on ins..

Surely that will be the hire co's problem if they haven't asked about convictions or checked a licence scan. The hirer will have done nothing wrong

I’ve hired cars in Spain, Malta and Germany and never been asked for that DVLA form.

Likely the customer will have agreed to T's & C's which are obscure or changed. Good luck sorting it out in a foreign country.
