SORN'd but still on the road?

A car near me is SORN'd and uninsured which is fair enough, but it's still on the road and balancing precariously on axle stands. If it were to fall of the stands and hit my car as I drive by it, how would that stand with a claim?

If the OP's vehicle is insured fully comp then they would need to claim of their own insurance not the MIB.

Yes, now you've done the research drive further away from it and you'll be safe. Hopefully a gust of wind won't send it crashing into you.

Or be proactive and kick/push it off the axle stands so it cannot fall into your car as you drive past 😀

Abandoned cars with parts missing are a complete eyesore. Phone your local council and ask them to remove it..

I'm sure I remember it being the driven wheels need to be two inches clear of the tarmac. This is based on my dads copy of the AA book of the law 40 years ago. Don't quote me.

It's the two rear wheels that are missing and it's a front wheel drive car. Hopefully it's just getting some new tyres or something. It's not had an MOT since November so hopefully finally getting it roadworthy again.

How long has it been there? A likely clue as to either stored there or doing a short job on it.
Is there proper off road storage available and has it ever been there rather than the road.
Short term having a job done....live with it until it becomes long term.
Been there all along....contact council.

My Alfa is sitting on my drive on Axle stands. It is Sorned and long out of MOT but it is still fully insured. It has no rear suspension on it and is covered in fresh paint in various places and other parts in various state of dismantled or cleaned up at the moment and I would be pissed if someone reported it as abandoned. don't be such a busybody.

Askmid will tell you if it's insured or not and your car is on your property. This one is just abandoned at the side of the road becoming an eyesore. You might have a different view if it was dumped outside your house.

If it's on your drive then all is well. This one isn't on private property, it's on the highway.

If its on a proper axle stand, then it is unlikely to fall off with a stiff breese, and you would have to be driving extremely close for it to hit your car if it did.

If your that concerned, report it, or even better, go and have a word with the owner and ask if its going to be there for long.

I would add a caveat of:

If it's on proper axle stands, that are suitable for the weight of the vehicle, and are located correctly, then it is highly unlikely to fall off with a stiff breeze. or vehicles passing by it.

With correctly located, suitable axle stands, you can have a car raised to a level which, to the initiated, seems precarious, and at risk of falling, when in reality, you could shove it as hard as you like and the car won't move.

Not necessarily - A car sliding off poorly located/unsuitable axle stands could easily end up going up to, and over the centre-line of the road (especially if only one end of the car is up on axle stands), so if you leave @ half a car width as you pass, it's quite possible to be hit by a car coming off axle stands.
