Does DOC cover include someone elses rental car?

My sister was visiting me at the weekend, and rented a car.
At one point we were visiting family, and I suggested driving as I know the area better and we were short on time.
In the end we decided against it, but in theory my insurance covers me driving someone elses car, does that include rental cars?

No. You can only drive with the owners permission and she isnt the owner.
Technically, you are absolutely right. However, you could also use that to say you cannot drive someone else's leased car, or company car. In reality, the hire company or any other owner would be quite happy for any claim to go thru your insurance instead of their insurance, so long as they get their car back fixed, and that would mean you covering the repair costs to the hire car and most DOC covers are just TPO cover. The opposite is true. Most DOC covers excludes vehicles leased to or hired by you.

in fact most DOC is 3rd party only
however, there are policies (I have one currently and have had similar from several other companies) where DOC is fully comp. and includes hire cars - but with an exclusion that it is only if the hire car is rented to me as the policy holder... so, even with those policies which go way beyond most, it is still hirer only...

I think the vast majority of policies are limited to third-party cover of some sort. Driving a hire car without cover for the vehicle itself would be for the brave only... The rental company can place whatever Ts & Cs they wish on their rental agreement, but they cannot impose Ts & Cs on other people or their insurance. If I had an insurance policy that allowed me to driver any other car (even without the owners permission), then my insurance would cover me to drive a rental car someone else had rented. The rental company cannot tell my insurance company that their Ts & Cs don't allow it. My insurance company have a contract with me, not the rental company.
