Smoke issue from next door

Hi. Wondering if someone with a better legal understanding than me would be kind enough to give me a few ideas or suggestions. We have a second home in Northumberland, the neighbours have installed a wood-burning hot-tub in their garden, it has a chimney which is about as high as the bedroom windows. The trouble is that given the usual wind direction when they light it (which is every nice sunny day) all the smoke blows over our property, its quite offensive if you sit in the garden (to the point your clothes end up smelling of smoke and need to be washed, eyes sting etc), if the windows are open then our whole house smells badly of smoke. We can’t enjoy the garden, the kids don’t want to play out and the interior of the house isn’t pleasant. It’s not a smokeless area, indeed many of us have log burners in the house, however this is very different, the smoke from interior log burners exits the chimney much higher up and the smoke from a typical bbq doesn’t make anything like the impact this does. I recognise the best resolution is discussion and we have tried (they’re friendly and apologetic but keep doing it). Any legal angles (do you need planning permission for such a big chimney? can someone really do so much damage to my enjoyment of a property we’ve paid for without recourse?) or do I just need to live with it? Thanks to anyone who replies.
Probably using crap wood that’s not dried properly also, Insist they use properly seasoned wood or the kiln dried stuff .
If that fails buy an enormous fan to blow the smoke back at them and make a racket , plus start burning the odd tyre as soon as they fire it up to show them who’s boss

I’d never heard of wood fired hot tubs so I googled them. Good news!

You should make the most of the romantic atmosphere, go round with your partner and join them in their tub.

Feel your pain OP. Have a similar smell problem from the neighbours. Their lad is rather into his weed and it’s really annoying we are down wind. Nice hot days when we are out in the garden you can smell it, have to shut all the windows and vents in our house so it doesn’t stink.
