Getting young lads to slow down

Surely this is just all part of the ‘invincibility of youth’. The thrill of speed plus the feeling that you can do anything and get away with it works perfectly. Until it doesn’t.
I remember a couple of my friends going that way back in the 70’s. Cars weren’t as quick, but then they didn’t handle that well either (as I learned by putting my dad’s Marina TC in a ditch).
I‘m not sure much has changed.

Such a tragedy when youngsters die in these circumstances - partly because they're young, but also because it's so unnecessary. My daughter's boyfriend is in his early 20's and smokes. I asked him "why the hell choose to smoke when there's warnings everywhere about the health risks, don't you care?"
He just shrugs and says "everything's bad for you, and you're gonna die of something anyway".
It's almost an "inshalla" attitude, which I've never understood.

How about if your phone detects that you're driving faster than you should for a given road, it disables itself for 24 hours. 
Back when I was 17 I drove too fast for the conditions at times, but it was self-limited as I had a car with 45bhp and little grip. Many of my friends were in the same boat.
A lot of the small shopping cars favoured by youth simply aren't available with less than 100bhp these days and you can guarantee some will be remapped for a bit more. Seeing how a couple of the local kids drive, if they come unstuck it will be at a much higher speed than the speed I'd have been able to do.
The key difference is that even though my stomping grounds were west London, proper hooning (hooning with 45bhp!) was limited to more suitable roads, but my local kids seem to like blatting round residential roads. This is especially bizarre when you consider that a mile or less in any direction from here yields a variety of roads much better suited to any driving desires.

There are very few males (of any age) who will accept that their driving is crap or inappropriate for the conditions. Very few (of any age) will genuinely believe that their driving could be improved, and in some cases significantly. They "know better".That being the case I doubt there's much that can be done to encourage younger drivers to drive more safely when so many of their elders and betters have the same mental attitude.
I'd say it is the immortality of youth and the fact they (all) drivers wanting to push the limits now move to the most dangerous roads to do so - the narrow, dark and potholed country roads/village roads where they know there will be no speed cameras.
It is unlikely the young can be cured of the desire to drive fast but it might be better to 'encourage' them to do so on motorways and such (so remove speed or average cameras) BUT have a real police presence whereby they and others can be stopped and spoken to, fined if necessary.
Speed or power limiters won't work as the lads will drive on the limiter anyhow and 40-50mph is more than enough to cause havoc on B roads and narrow country lanes anyhow.

About 10 years ago my other half was involved in a fatal where the causes were the excessive speed, overconfidence and poor driving of the young man driving the other car. Luckily my other half was physically unhurt.
She had pulled out of our drive onto an empty road, but we live just after a bend. He was driving far too fast in a 40 limit on what he thought was a clear road, then he came round the corner to find my other partner's car in the road, rather than brake he swerved to overtake her, lost control and hit a wall head on. He died.
Later investigations by us found that he was trying to beat his fastest time home from football training, although the person who told us that would not tell the police.
Ironically the police sergeant investigating later admitted that he had stopped the youth a few weeks earlier for driving like an idiot but had simply given him a warning, he thought that would be enough, it wasn't.
One of the problems is that modern cars are so much more powerful now compared to what I drove as a youngster, you are also very well insulated from that speed, so drivers often don't appreciate actually how fast they are going or how dangerous that is, they also think they are indestructable.
I think that one of the answers could be to limit the power of cars for those with limited driving experience, say for the first two years after passing their test, maybe even limit them again of they rack up enough speeding/driving convictions within a certain time, but we all know that some of them will find ways around that, even if it was introduced.
