Here's a conundrum for you....

I've recently been the lucky recipient of a 6 point endorsement on my licence after an SP50 on the M606 outside bradford. Uphill into the city is 70, downhill out is 50 for no reason I can fathom. First time driving the road, missed the 50 sign and got flashed at the bottom.... at 76. Matter went to court, pleaded guilty and got the endorsement.

Now for the interesting part. When the court wrote to me detailing my results, they stated the DVLA would contact me regarding my licence being sent to them if needed. That was at least 4 weeks ago. I've heard nothing from them. The DVLA website states I'm required to send my licence in for endorsement within 4 weeks, offence not to etc etc so I thought I'd get in contact with them to clarify, one way or the other. And beg for forgiveness if I was meant to send it in after all.

Problem is, I can't. The phone line won't even ring, no matter when/how many times you try - it either comes up as the line being busy, or it just doesn't connect, as if the number doesn't exist. They have a webchat option, but won't respond to it outside of the (useless) robot autochat thing. And I can't email them because 'the service is closed' due to COVID.

Am I going to have another NIP for not sending my licence in? Do I have a leg to stand on regarding lack of communication? And should I go throw a pipe bomb into the DVLA office in Swansea as revenge for being so bloody useless?

Are you still on a pre-photocard license? If not then there is no longer a paper counterpart to endorse (even if your current license was issued with one, it’s no longer used). If you do have a photocard license, what is shown on the online service for checking and sharing your license details?

If it’s a full paper license then I guess you’ll just have to keep pressing the DVLA, they are experiencing a lot of COVID related delays in anything that isn’t an online transaction.

Keep a time, day, date of everything you do. Consider a letter, sent recorded.

Apologies for not stating that part, I forgot everyone else can't magically see what kind of licence I have I have a 2-part licence, issued 2007. I have the paper part upstairs but haven't used it in years. I also have a photocard licence which I keep on me day-to-day. The DVLA website correctly shows my points as present, everything else accurate.

I just don't want to get screwed by not actively trying not to get screwed. This happens a lot to me.

You can dispose of the paper part, it is abolished.

OP, you have a letter from the court stating “the DVLA would contact me regarding my licence being sent to them if needed.” I think this is your Get out of Gaol Free card.

I wouldn't - its great for confusing police if stopped overseas - has got me off many a ticket when the police have no idea what it is and let you on your way as trying to find out is too much hassle.

The DVLA site is just generally confusing (I wonder if they do it on purpose) and I can't make head nor tail of the 'information' they have listed. As CanAm said, I have the court letter as a get out of jail free card, but I don't want to end up in the position where I have to use it!

Note that the solicitor's website refers to a Fixed Penalty case. Yours isn't a Fixed Penalty case. There were court proceedings.

Unless DVLA requests it then you are not required to send your licence to the DVLA.

Then you have a single part licence anyway. Just log into the DVLA website and check out your own licence. You will probably see the points on the record.
