Outdoor fire rules

Hi all

Would appreciate opinions. A house across a couple of fields has been having a bonfire every evening during the recent hot spell. The acrid smoke travels to ours and our neighbours homes and of course we all have our windows open. Not great. Looks like it is garden rubbish they are burning but it smells really strong.

Are there any rules on lighting fires on your own property? We do live in a semi rural area and understand if farmers have a job to do. But actually not sure this is a farmer.

If it is acrid smoke rather than wood smoke, etc then consult your local environmental health dept.
You can ask for their advice without making a complaint, etc.

Regardless of what they're burning, I'd have thought having any type of bonfire whilst the countryside is tinderbox dry is highly irresponsible right now! Sparks travel!

It is covered under nuisance law. And you can address it through the council. Though it may cost you. As above, if it is acrid and not garden waste (which should be pretty dry given the weather) that is a different issue.

Occasional fires are allowed.

Have you had a word with him and requested he only burns when the wind is blowing in a different direction?

Appreciate the insight. If it continues then i think i will go and talk to him / her first and if no joy and it still continues that the council.
