Doubt you'd need to be outside to learn how to turn a camera on and point it up the road.

This is an opportunity to educate myself on how they operate to avoid any possible future points.

I've never had points for speeding in 12 years of driving and I take great pride in this.

Outside the police station for those who know it just before the round about were about half a dozen officers and what I presume was a speed camera on a tripod.

Not sure because there were so many of them if it was a training exercise because;

1. It was outside a police station.

2. There were a good half dozen of them.

Soon as I clocked the hi vis I slowed.

I captured the event on my dash cam. I have analysed it myself.

Not sure if they had the camera pointed at the slip road or for the traffic coming from the 40 > NSL zone probably the latter. Sneaky bds.

The view of the camera would have initially been obstructed by a lorry I think?



Once they were back into view I was down to the < speed limit.



As I passed one of them removed his helmet like he was going to have a go.

Whether or not I speed or not is irrelevant. I have never been caught so yes I am proud of that.

There are some villages near me which have the signs which display your speed as you approach them.

The signs seem to spend a few weeks in one location then move to a nearby village.

Shortly after the sign disappears there's sometimes a tripod-mounted thing like that with one or sometimes two police using it.

So I'd guess it is a speed gun of some sort and they place them where the speed-measuring signs have detected a lot of cars driving at just the right speed for an awareness course.

It looks like a surveyor's theodolite to me - so presumably they were checking if you were flying straight and level.
You will know if this is correct if you receive a private pilot's licence in the post in the next 14 days.

Lesson 1: If while driving you see a lot of policemen standing around what appears to be a camera of some sort then it's best to stick to the speed limit on that particular stretch of road.
