The Department of Transport is consulting on plans to give cyclists right of way to undertake a left turning vehicle or overtake a right turning vehicle. Consultation document is below:

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/review...

Seems completely dangerous to me, it only takes a few minutes to respond to the consultation and put your views.

The main alterations to the code being proposed are:

- introducing a hierarchy of road users which ensures that those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others
- clarifying existing rules on pedestrian priority on pavements, to advise that drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road,
- providing guidance on cyclist priority at junctions to advise drivers to give priority to cyclists at junctions when travelling straight ahead
- establishing guidance on safe passing distances and speeds when overtaking cyclists and horse riders

Sounds entirely reasonable to me.

Seems reasonable to me too. Vulnerable road users need extra protection and I'm sure the stats back this up.

Maybe its time for them to start paying road tax and have compulsory insurance as well

Be sure to put that in your response to the consultation - it will make your views sound much more reasonable and considered hehe

Just deduct it from the "road tax" they already pay. I don't know anyone who cycles who doesn't already pay VED for their cars.

Most of it is reasonable, they just need to clarify that passing a vehicle on the left that is clearly indicating to make a left turn is not a right of way you have.

Also, people need to read up on the difference between "right of way" and "priority", they are different things and I don't see anything regarding the former.

I think that’s clear, and I think the intended changes are to clarify that’s its not permissible to pass a cyclist on the right and then immediately indicate and/or turn left.

Road Tax doesn't exist, hasn't done for years.

My concern is travelling slowly approaching a junction signalling left and cyclist undertakes just as turning left. So the undertaker has priority/right of way?

Yes, quite, I’ve experienced it as driver and pedestrian in germany and works very well. Especially turning into/crossing minor roads, where at the moment in the UK the situation is quite poorly defined.

Great, a hierarchy of "road users" based on self entitlement, and graveyards full of "I had right of way" inscriptions.

And the pols won't care - any accidents will lower average speeds further and another box gets ticked. Promotions and pensions all round!

It's entirely pointless

I may have right of way on my motor bike but when a car cuts the corner / pulls out etc I move out of the way as I don't want to be killed

Not much point being right and dead

I read through the changes a while ago and they all sounded reasonable, although I think various groups will take issue with some of the detail of the wording.

eg. the road positioning recommendation for cyclists is good but it says...

---
New Rule 72 - Road positioning. When riding on the roads, there are two basic road positions you should adopt, depending on the situation.
1. Ride in the centre of your lane, to make yourself as clearly visible as possible, in the following situations:
  • on quiet roads or streets – if a faster vehicle comes up behind you, move to the left to enable them to overtake, if you can do so safely
  • in slower-moving traffic move over to the left if you can do so safely so that faster vehicles behind you can overtake when the traffic around you starts to flow more freely
  • at the approach to junctions or road narrowings where it would be unsafe for drivers to overtake you
2. When riding on busy roads, with vehicles moving faster than you, allow them to overtake where it is safe to do so whilst keeping at least 0.5m away from the kerb edge. Remember that traffic on most dual carriageways moves quickly. Take extra care crossing slip roads
---

I get what they are trying to say, but it's not worded very well at all. The second describes a behaviour rather than a position.

You could give cyclists priority everywhere but it would make absolutely zero difference to their fatality rate, other than perhaps increasing it.. Undertake left turning trucks lol what utter lunacy. Most motorists don’t even know basics like keeping left on motorways either so clearly very few indeed bother to read the HC at all.

The more rights they are given that nobody will know about the better really, and it’ll all work itself out in the end as the deaths, disagreements, anger and chaos continue to rise.

If, theoretically, you actually wanted to reduce deaths of self entitled eco woke warrior muppets you should legislate the exact reverse order priority than that proposed, i.e. those with the biggest and most dangerous vehicles at the top, because, well, it would introduce them to how it really works 99% of the time in real life (outside of their woke eco bubble.) Not that the authors of these proposals would have any experience of that..
