Question about speed awareness course?
Discussion
I got done 48 in a 30 the other day, straight to 3 points and fine, first time I've ever been done.
Not that I have been caught, but if I was to be done on, say, the motorway at 80 something, could I be offered the course? Or is it only ever valid for your first offence, which in my case wasn't an option as 48 was too high?

Courses are offered in England and Wales at up to Limit + 10% + 9mph provided you haven't done a similar course in the last 3 years.
A motorway course, a "general" speeding course, a smart motorway course and a 20mph course are all different.
Previous speeding offences don't come into it so you will be offered a course if you fit the criteria even if you're on 9 points.

Cool good to know, means I can relax a tiny bit on the motorway, at the moment I'm cruise control at 69 for fear of getting more points! A motorway course, a "general" speeding course, a smart motorway course and a 20mph course are all different.

Cruise control at 69 saves you loads of fuel and stress, without costing you much time.
But perhaps that's not an appropriate comment on Pistonheads.
In mitigation, I save my speeding for track days.
Yes agreed, but sometimes I could maybe edge up to 75 without worrying too much But perhaps that's not an appropriate comment on Pistonheads.

I didn't think there was a different motorway course from a smart motorway course.A motorway course, a "general" speeding course, a smart motorway course and a 20mph course are all different.

As long as you don't hold people up. A true 70 will be about 73, 74 on the speedo (possibly a little more). But perhaps that's not an appropriate comment on Pistonheads.

In my Nissan it is 77 on the speedo.
In my TVR it's 68 on the speedo
First thing I always do when i buy a new-to-me car is find out the true speeds.
But I agree, most modern German cars tend to show about 3mph faster than the truth

Mind you with a Tiv anything is possible.

My TVR is on non-standard wheels, in order to accommodate non-standard front brakes.https://www.startrescue.co.uk/breakdown-cover/moto...

On the course I did about 18 months ago, the moderator told us that you could only do 1 course every 2 years, and that if we got a ticket within that 2 yr window it would be points and a fine.
But it may have been BS, he was the type that might have been full of it.
It doesn't work the other way IME, you can be offered a course if you have existing points for speeding.
Also I believe the limit +10% rule is not a rule but a guideline, so in some regions the policy will differ slightly.
Speeding on the motorway is too much like hard work most of the time these days. Too much traffic and no lane discipline, never mind all the av spd cameras. 65-75 on cruise for me.

The rule, as I understand it, is you are only eligibile for an SAC if your speed fits their parameters, and you haven't done one in the last 3 years and 6 months. But it may have been BS, he was the type that might have been full of it.

As you say, beware assuming that you can be at the limit plus 10% plus 3mph before you get prosecuted.
Lincolnshire, which includes a fair bit of the A1, prosecute if you are the limit, plus 10%, plus 2 mph, so I was done for 57 in a 50 in roadworks.
It was the one time I wasn't on cruise, having slowed down for the half mile of roadworks near Grantham. My fault, wasn't concentrating well enough.
Late evening, nobody working, no traffic are not valid excuses. It is what it is, I did the SAC (only 2.5 hours on the Teams online version) and we motor on.

I tend not to find speed limits on most tracks (except for the pit lane entry and paddock) - so is that where you choose to do your 'speeding' But perhaps that's not an appropriate comment on Pistonheads.

I just drive to the conditions on both road and track, sometimes a bit over the limit, sometimes much slower due to traffic/weather!

53 in a 40.
40mph....
At 4.30 am
Without another car in visible distance
Because 1 of the 4 lanes was shut.
On the M4 near Bristol.
Gantries said 50. I passed 3 or 4 gantries .
Then one was set at 40 for some reason. Easy money for the Government.
I think 53 was the upper limit for SAC so I'll see how that goes but even when you are driving at a reasonable speed you can still get caught out!
