Supervising learner drivers
Discussion
Hi Guys
Can someone clarify this for me, I can’t find a clear answer online.
When supervising a learner in a car that does not belong to you. Do you, as the supervisor, have to be insured on the vehicle.
Given you are deemed to be in control of the vehicle, I’m presuming you do.
If so, would you own policy cover you, if it allows 3rd party covers for vehicles that don’t belong to you.
Thanks in advance

It might be better to have you named as a driver of the car on the primary drivers insurance, both to lower their insurance and assuming a fully comp policy, means the car is fully covered as well.
Edit: no you don't, but it is advised.
Apologies, just read the subheadline of this article: https://www.rac.co.uk/insurance/learner-driver-ins...

Daughter thought she had been caught out on this a few months ago. She was was supervising a friend in a car he had purchased from her some 24hrs earlier. Friend crashes the car in a supermarket car park after 100 yards or so, transpired he was a lot less experienced at driving than he had led her to believe. Police attended, friend was insured so they went away happy but a few days later a 7 day producer arrives from Police asking for proof daughter was also insured on vehicle. Cue much panic from daughter and some internet digging from me to prove she was in the clear as she was not the vehicle owner. Actually the biggest problem was trying to find an open Police station within a reasonable distance without huge queues within 7 days - no chance of tbat. In the end resorted to posting the info ( proof of sale and DVLA transfer printout ) and have heard nothing more since.
