police- was this a bit strange

was out cleaning the car yesterday and a car pulls up , its a cop car , driver says "im new to the area , any ideas where i should look " gave him a bit of a blank look and he repeats it , i say nah "no idea" and off he goes

small rural village with no bother , surely the station has more info on hot spots etc , wondered if it was a veiled attempt at grass on your neighbours over the rule of 6 or something?

Serious answer, he's new to the area and wanted a local to give him a heads up as to where he needs to keep an eye on - eg where stolen cars get dumped, fly tipping etc. Sounds like good old fashioned coppering to me.

Someone on another thread will no doubt be moaning about how coppers never interreact and just drive around in their cars all day / sit in the canteen waiting for a shout / eat donuts in Subway.

This sums up the challenges the old bill face perfectly. They’re regularly criticised for not engaging with locals and not acting upon intelligence given by people actually from the area. When this one does he’s then criticised anyway.
On a separate note, you mention the officer has an intelligence unit to tell him where he should be looking. How do you think that unit gets their intelligence? It’s surely bobbies like him gathering it.

Bingo, not forgetting the majority of people dont call the police about every fly tip, out of place car or shifty bloke they see.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

When hes worked the area for a while then he'll start submitting intelligence. In the meantime, whilst new, he'll use whats already on the system and hopefully add to it. Hes not being criticised for stopping

He’ll start submitting it straight away or get bked. All police forces in the UK are intelligence led. Him only being in the job or area a short time doesn’t decrease the value of his intelligence.

Imagine if he didn’t submit something due to being new and it was a small part of a larger intelligence picture which was subsequently missed and caused further victims.

He could have asked you about cars being dumped and drug dealers and you may not have mentioned the chap who batters his Mrs every Sunday or the strange chap who seems to be drawn to young kids. He’s just kept the question open hoping to get you talking. Perhaps if he’d read that you had something to say he’d have got out his car and chatted. Had he got out his car and chatted directly you may be pissed that your neighbours now think you’re a snitch? He can’t act in a specific way that everyone wants, I think he was just doing the best to do his job which as it was around your area can only be a good thing :-)

Assuming the OP's description is accurate, the question was so vague you can't tell whether they are asking for tip offs for things to investigate or the best place locally for a coffee and donut. Faced with the same question I'd probably give a bewildered response too.

Interesting. I feel that if a copper said to me, "I'm new to the area, any ideas where I should look?" id assume he was asking about baddies rather than coffee but great point non the less. Perhaps my positive outlook jades me.

Either way you can see from my explanation above as to why sometimes officers won't just strike up a conversation about what's going on in an area for fear of causing the recipient some issues with neighbours who witness it.

Going by the op's response he's probably now got him down as a local not interested in engaging.
Other locals may be more forthcoming & I think that's who he's trying to find.
Being new on a beat - regardless of your length of service - you've got to start somewhere & in the current climate people may not want someone just walking up to them.
Permanent beat officers who've worked a beat for years & have become known & trusted by the residents are IME one of the best sources of good quality information going.
