Driving the fun car in North Yorkshire and I'm not convinced I was doing 30 in a 30 (speedo is only in KMH so not really too sure - still getting to grips doing the mental conversion). Anticipating being caught by a camera van, within the course range discretionary range (definitely below 40). I've been given points (band A) in North Yorkshire before, last year. Given COVID, what's the likelihood of being given the option for a speed awareness course?

No advice regarding SAC, but maybe start using Waze whenever you drive to help ensure you're driving at or below the legal limit. I do so in my JDM cars to avoid any inaccurate maths.

SAC are being done via Zoom calls at least in some areas. I know someone who did one when they got a NIP in North Lincs the other week. Only took a couple of hours but no tea or biccies.

36 to 42 and you can do a course if you haven't done one within the last three years. Doesn't matter if you have points on your licence already.

43+ and you'll get a FPN.

50+ and it's a summons (or SJP...can never remember what it is now).

Course threshold in North Yorkshire is 35-42 mph inclusive.

I suspect a Fixed Penalty rather than "points band A." A Fixed Penalty won't make any difference to eligibilty.

OP, get yourself a speedo / odometer app for your phone. I use GPStrip in which the background changes to red when the speed limit is exceeded, easier to notice than having to constantly read a number - not that I've ever seen it turn red of course...

Thanks folks - time to play the two week waiting game!

The hateful irony to all of this - I fitted CarPlay to the TVR and the display went off about 100m earlier - iPhone is playing silly buggers with a dirty connector so TomTom wasn't as helpful as it normally is. Thanks for all your suggestions though, always appreciated :-)

(and if any of you know the best way to clean an iPhone connector....)

Carefully cut slivers of red tape stuck onto the speedo at the 30, 50, and 70 mph points are useful on my Italian motorbike, although as I am usually too frightened to open my eyes when I am out biking I only have my brother's word for this.

Alcohol wipes will work for the cable connector. A little plastic pick will pull the fluff and gumph out of the inside of the iPhone cable socket. I've done it before with a metal paperclip... but at my own risk and I wouldn't recommend that to anyone else.

As said Waze all the way , you would have probably got a warning about the mobile camera , unless your super unlucky and no ones reported it.
I had the opposite problem , my digital speedo reads in KPH and the hard to read dial is MPH .
Panicked in 40 when I saw the camera van, glanced at speedo , said 62, sulked for a week waiting for my letter and didn’t use the car , when I finally did I realised it was actually kph and I was well under . As long as you where under 56kph your good anyway

Or get an mph speedometer for the car, or get a replacement face for the speedometer that shows mph, and is suitably calibrated to display the appropriate mph reading for the equivalent speed in Kph.

I guess I must be just lucky to know that 50kph is @ 30mph, 80kph is @ 50mph, 100kph is @ 62mph (mainly due to the old 0~60mph acceleration test in magazines being replaced by 0~100kph [62mph] tests) and 120kph is @ 75mph.



I did once follow a 42 tonne truck on Romanian plates in a 30mph zone, crawling along at less than 20 mph. At first I thought: "Why is he driving so slowly?" then I realised - We were doing bang on 30kph instead of 30mph!

I then thought to myself: "S#!t he's in for a long old day of getting nowhere fast!"
