What is the point in time that the quarantine laws kick in when you are traveling back to the UK, I have a friend who is traveling back from Turkey this evening and due to land in the UK at 1.30 tomorrow morning, it only needs a couple of hours delay for it to arrive after 4am when the new rules kick in.
So when does the 4am thing come into play, is it after he has boarded the plane in Turkey, left their air space, landed in the UK or cleared customs/immigration? I'll bet you could easily find yourself in a 2 hr queue at customs in the UK they say they operate.

I have just been looking at the rules for my son, he is currently living in Spain (Badajoz) but may come over for Christmas. As I see it he would self isolate with us, that raises two points. He can not have a flight booked for return until day 15 as I see it and does the rest of the house hold then have to self isolate from his departure day or are expected to isolate from his arrival until 14 days after his departure? Of cause this could all change several times by Christmas. Logically it would make more sense for us to go there.

Yes, its the time you arrive in the UK.There was an instance with one of the countries being added to the list (probably France) where by a cross channel Ferry company gave direction to their last sailing before the quarantine law came into effect to travel at a faster than normal speed, to reduce the crossing time so that it docked before the quarantine came into effect. From memory I think they arrived 36 minutes earlier than scheduled so beat the restriction.

No, I believe that other members of the household would only need to isolate if they started showing symptoms. Doesn’t make sense to me either. Just finished my 14 day quarantine having come back from France two Thursdays ago. And I paid for a test at home kit and was negative. Shrug
I wouldn't be worried, if its anything like Stansted last week, there's absolutely no checks on the forms. And passengers off flights from both quarantine req'd and not req'd destinations were freely mixing in the immigration & baggage areas as per a normal day. And that was at 6pm, never mind a 1:30am arrival.

There never was any intent of segregating arrivals from "clean" and "unclean" destinations. If you want to comply then comply. If you don't then it's very easy not too also. There is a law on it, but as it is unenforceble it's really a personal choice.GT03ROB said:

That's kind of what I'm getting at, If it was that seriously taken (and those of a tin foil hat persuasion may say "needed), separation would be enforced, nothing would get past border force etc. The question must be, if you're not going to back up the seriousness of your rules/law, why have the rules/law?For the record, I am quarantining, even though I came back from Croatia where the infections and positive tests are immensely lower than here, never mind the exact area of the country I was in, Istria region, which barely rises above 10 active cases. But that's another debate.

I got in from France last Friday week. Was asked at the British border at Eurotunnel whether I had my form but he didn't ask to look at it and no one has checked on my whereabouts.Having done it yesterday, and now in quarantine, I agree that it is the point at which you enter the UK.
But I don't think it's when you land, I believe it's when you pass through the UK border control. When you do, they scan your Covid declaration form barcode which triggers an immediate email back to you with the details. That scan will record the date and time of entry.
People in transit land and take off again without ever entering the country.
