The car in question is a 2016 F07 5 series GT

On the 22nd September the window was smashed and the steering wheel was stolen. Insurance picked up the car the same day and it was taken to a repair centre.

Last week they called me to say the car is ready. When i turned up i tested the steering wheel and it wouldn't heat up as it should. They tried to fob me off and said they will book it in but i left the car. While i was there i noticed the rear of the car looked low but i put it down to how it was parked.

The next day they rang me and said it was sorted (a fuse had gone) and they would drop it off to me. When it showed up the rear of the car was noticeably low and I refused the car They seemed P'd off that they had to take the car back again but after speaking to my insurance company they said to reject it. In a conversation they said they noticed the car was sitting low (so why did they drive it to me?)

I then emailed my insurance company saying i'm not happy with the service or workmanship of the repair place and i didn't want them working on the car anymore. This morning i noticed on the connected app that the car was in Croydon (auto diagnostic company) and then went back to the repair centre. They then rang up saying the airbag had a hole in it and the air pump wasn't working. My problem with this is that i have picture of the car on the back of the recovery lorry when they picked it up and the suspension is fine. This also means they have driven the car 30/40 miles with an airbag not inflated which could have caused the damage to it.

They are now submitting a report to the insurance to say that the airbag and pump need replacing which i have a feeling they will say it's not their issue.

Am i entitled to tell my insurance company the get the car away from the repair centre and take it to BMW and let them diagnose the fault and possible reason why anything has failed? I believe the repair company have just taken it to a contact to get them to diagnose something to take any blame off them.

Sorry for the rant!!

You can certainly make your case known - good chance the insurance company also are raising eyebrows over this.

Not sure they will let it go to BMW though, more they will demand the work is done to your satisfaction but at the dealer's expense.

But you never know, if there has been a pattern of complaints then they may throw in the towel and accept your idea.

Worth a go.

Not knowing anything about the car, I presume the airbag and pump are to do with the rear suspension and nothing to do with the steering wheel.

I'm wondering how they would have got damaged with damage and repair to the window and wheel? It's it more likely to have happened during the recovery?

Still needs to be sorted by the insurance company but not the fault of the bodyshop?

Rear airbags fail often on these. It’s probably unconnected to the theft. Re steering wheel heating-obviously needs fixing.

Could there be some electrical issue caused by ripping the steering wheel off that prevented the pump from working?
