Scrapping a car with no V5C

Did some house renovations and cannot find the V5C for an old Ford I want to scrap.
The online scrappers say it is fine I can just write to the DVLA and yes, the DVLA say the same.
BUT...has anyone done it this way? If I am not getting the V5C signed and that by the scrap dealer, what should I get instead?
