Parking in central hatched areas

Just moved to Glasgow and the road our flat is on has quite a wide hatched central area in the middle, broken by pedestrian crossing islands.

Parking is a problem and it seems to be the norm to park in the middle hatchings once the kerbside parking is full.

I'm uncomfortable with this, but enough people seem to do it to suggest it isn't enforced by the council or police. The cars in the middle aren't really causing an obstruction and it is not a busy road.

Is this legal? Would you join everyone doing it, or just drive further down the street and park kerbside, maybe a few minutes walk away.

If broken lines on edge of hatched area and no visual obstruction issues for pedestrians or drivers then I cannot see any legal issue
